Insomnia When Traveling, Sleeping Pills?
It is almost midnight, and I am wide awake.
This happens a lot when I travel for work. I'm in a hotel room, often on the East Coast where my body clock thinks it is 3 hours earlier, I'm bored, and I just cannot get to sleep. Or, I sleep for an hour and then wake up. I never have trouble sleeping at home, or when I'm traveling on vacation. Just when I'm on the road for work. Then it is common. What to do? I'm thinking about getting a prescription for sleeping pills. I've never taken them in my life. Thoughts, suggestions? I'm currently downing a pint of Guiness, in hopes that will help. |
Take a hot shower do some light stretching. Tomorrow try a little walking and a little alcohol. I set my watch when I leave LA to the new time zone as the plane is taking off to start to get me used to the time zone change ASAP. The Guinness will help, drink some water after being on a plane for 4-5 hours. Try wacking off! It couldn't hurt!

I travel a lot or work too. I have a YMCA membership so I can get in a workout pretty much anywhere I go which helps. Hotels can be very dry. I run the shower on full hot (I'm not in it) and leave the bathroom door open for a little bit to get some humidity in the room. Cover the vent (usually a constant suction) in the can with t-paper to keep the humidity in. I try to keep the heat off. Cooler room=better sleep for me. Always book away from the elevator, freeway, and especially the vending/ice machine. Beer might help, but I've found that a couple of Scotches usually does the trick. Unfortunately, for some the alcohol sugars kick in a couple hours later and wake them up. Not me. Try to clear your mind of work related issues. Think of home or some other pleasant thought.

I used to travel 50% of the time for work, a lot of it internationally. What worked for me was Ambien. I just use it for the first two nights of the trip to adjust and it works like a charm. You need a prescription for it. I just explained to my doctor what my work/travel schedule was and it was no problem.

Melatonin. Take it about 20 minutes before you want to go to sleep. Its not a drug, its is the hormone your brain releases when its time to got to sleep. Works very well for me.
Of course there was the time I woke up after taking the stuff in a gimp outfit with a banana in my rear, but that was pretty much a one time thing....pretty much. |

tylenol pm is pretty good..unisom even stronger in my experience. a little alcohol may help, but too much interferes with sleep brain waves.

Best thing to do when you cannot sleep is well something else. Eventually you will crash, and then sleep really well. Just if you start seeing things, then you might want to try something else... |
I hear you..it's 3:37 here and I have to be up at 8 to get ready for classes. Downloading Vista Ultimate 64 bit (MSDN subscription). Hopefully it will be better than 32 bit, but I'm not holding out much hope. Anyway...
Seriously, when I can't sleep, I read something technical. Programming, math, physics, anything. Anything that requires a high degree of firing neurons. The only reason I'm not reading it now is because I've spent the past few hours studying math anyway. I shouldn't have taken that nap earlier. Quote:

JYL, I used to be like that when I was married and I traveled for work. Now, seems like I'm exhausted and pass out easily when I travel for work.
You miss your wife. My opinion? Screw the drugs, I personally don't like them. Just catch up when you get home. But that's just me....I don't even like cold medicine LOL. But, if they work for others, then I suppose more power to ya. |
I can relate. In just the last year or so I have become an insomniac after NEVER having had problems sleeping before. 3:50am.
I slept from about 10pm till about 1am, got up to let out the dog and I can NEVER get back to sleep. Haven't tried any drugs yet and don't really want to. This happens about every other night. On other nights, I sleep straight through. But even on nights I sleep I don't seem to need more than 5-6 hours max. Weird. |
advil PM. Works great for me. Just take a half of one or you will feel stupid the next day.

I cant sleep in hotels mostly because they always build them next to highways and Im not used to the noise. I use earplugs and at time have also used sleeping pills.

Search and then read posts by STEVEPAA and that'll get you bored and sleepy.
