See now there you go... fishing around to try and fulfill your own misconceptions about Michigan fans....

are you an ohiohate fan 9dreizig? lol...

Anyway my history with THE University of Michigan: My father went there and got his masters from UM. We had season tickets growing up and I went to EVERY home game and some road games starting in the late 70s on until the early 90s when I went off to college and my dad had some health issues and could no longer attend the games.

Where did I got to college ? Central Michigan University... why not Michigan? I applied to Michigan and got accepted. I had some financial aid packages and scholarships in place but was still out $5 grand per semester... our family was not rich and the season tickets were one of the few luxury items we had...my dad was a school teacher... So I went to CMU for 2 reasons a) I could afford to pay for it... and b) the Broadcasting and Cinematic Arts program at CMU was and is one of the best in the nation... UM had at that time more of a theoretical approach towards a Communications degree... also my Girlfriend was going to CMU....tough choice but I made it and have not regretted it... Later I got a post grad degree at MTSU in Murfressboro TN.

I worked in Ann Arbor and commuted from Farmington Hills from 2000-2003.

Michigan is still my foundation and my soul.

anything else? what school did you attend and why?

9dreizig 01-12-2008 08:05 PM

Ahhh a Chip,,, a fine school ,, puked my guts out there in my first college party ever..
I of course went to the first land grant college in the country... Go SPARTY!!!!
I too was a wayward child and attended a game or two in Angst Arbor, but then saw the light...Girls were MUCH cuter in E. Lansing.. Long line of MSU grads in my family...
Still a lion and tiger fan right ??

Sonic dB 01-12-2008 08:10 PM

MSU is a fun campus with great girls. Occaisionally we used to drive down from Mt. Pleasant to party at MSU for the weekend...my roommate's brother went there. Fun times... too cold in the winter up there though. What do you think of Dantonio?

9dreizig 01-12-2008 08:19 PM

He seems to be what we needed, can't wait to see what his recruits will do (Smith was such a flake).. With Rodreguiz (sp it's late) in the big ten should be interesting.... All my UM buddies were certainly happy to see Karr step aside..
Sorry about your loss to Purdue, would have liked to see you guys pull that off

Fran was scrambling before it was popular in the pros and many times is was a designed play. Also it's hard to compare eras, but 30+ years ago, receivers were blanketed by defensive backs and there were no pass-interference calls unless it was very flagrant.

Modern football has evolved into much more of a passing game for excitement. Rules and related penalties were molded to allow for more successful passing attacks and hence, tons more scoring.

There are a couple Raider greats out there too... Darrell Lamonica and Kenny Stabler. Maybe not top 10, but exciting to watch, with their hangovers from the night before .... ;)

Favre is TOO MUCH !
But when will he grow up ? :)

Loved watching a Big game in the snow.
Gotta love the Packers
Go Giants !

Tarkenton - loved watching him play.

Unitas # 10 ? !!! You lost all credibility there Sonic.
There was football before the Super Bowl you know.

URY914 01-13-2008 02:53 AM

You can't rank QB's by Super Bowl rings. Rings are won by the team. This is an individual QB ranking. You gotta go by stats.

sammyg2 01-13-2008 07:35 AM

I liked Fran (until he started doing stupid TV shows) but he had some liabilities. His arm strength was never very good. he could throw a 40 yarder but it floated like a wounded duck.

Without that cannon for an arm I have a problem ranking him in the same class as Brady or Montana or Young or Favre.

I understand your point...however more than any other position in football... or professional team sports (except for goalie) for that matter, the QB is responsible for the teams success...

Look at the playoff teams this weekend... ALL have really good to great QBs that lead them there:

Manning, Brady, Farve, Romo, Garrard, Hasselback, Lil Manning, Rivers (some young up and comers).

In this day and age, if you dont have at least a good to great QB...your team is TOAST.

Regarding stats, if we just ranked the all timers based on that...you would have a list that goes:
1) Farve 2) Marino 3) Manning 4) Warren Moon...Dan Fouts etc.

I just cant see it going that way can you?

Manning has had 3 more seasons as a starter than Tom Brady has..... When it is all said and done, Manning, who has about 8 seasons left in his career... will own the record book...

however Brady, probably has 10 seasons left as a starter (he is 1.5 years younger than Manning)...and if he puts up some future seasons that are close to the one that he had this year, then he will be pretty close to Manning's stats when done...and probably ahead of Brett at that time...

Stats are important, but sometimes in football it is important to do other things as the QB to lead your team...therefore the all-time list needs to account for all of those qualities including stats but not relegated to just stats.

JCF 01-13-2008 08:47 AM

So tell us how 3-9 rank above your #10 ?

Stats ?
His run of 47 td's still stands (never seriously challenged even).
10 Pro Bowls - still most for a QB.
3-9 (xcept for Manning though in relative terms even then ) - not so much.
Held all significant passing records when retired.

Field leader ?
Again not even close.

Chamionships? 3 (one a Super Bowl) is as many or more than most on that list.

The Sporting News ranked him #1 of the 50 greatest ( Montana was second)

And Bart Starr ?

Yes, I can. Favre has played for 4 coaches, countless teammates, and has great success for the most part. If Brady, or Manning, has Favre's longevity and outstrips him in the record books, I'll be glad to revisit this with you.

lyon 01-13-2008 09:04 AM

I'm looking forward to the Farve - Brady showdown at the Superbowl this year.

9dreizig 01-13-2008 10:45 AM

you guys need to give Sonic a break,, he pee's maize and blue, and can't see past his wolverine fur

lendaddy 01-13-2008 11:05 AM

Forget Brady even exists, you can't call Favre the best of all time, that's silly.

He may be the toughest, most exciting and perhaps the greatest "play-making" QB of all time but if you were assembling the best team possible from history he wouldn't be on it. He's won a lot of games with his style but lost many because of it as well.

lol whatever Sparty... ;) My Michigan fan has nothing to do with seeing the obvious.

Unlike most fans, I look at sports objectively 100% without Bias. When Drew Stanton becomes Mr. All Pro for the Lions I will give him credit that he will have earned.

Look I am not the only one that considers Brady the best of all time. Farve played on a team with all stars all over it in the mid 90s and won 1 superbowl. This year, really has been incredible for him because he is taking a bunch of younger talented offensive guys and bringing them up to a great level...but he STILL needs McCarthys system to do it in (remember the Dallas game when Brett went away from the system and looked Terrible?)

Froom 2001-2006 Brady played basically with a bunch of chump wide receivers (none of which has gone on to do anything after they left NE) and he put up Pro Bowl Numbers and Won 3 Superbowls...

now that he finally has good weapons...it is like Techmo Bowl videogame stuff out there and will continue to be so...

No other QB has ever put up 50 TD passes in a season. None have went 26-28 in a playoff game... EVERY throw from Brady last night was DEAD ON the receivers hands. Every one of them, 2 were dropped...

Brady is 30, Peyton is 31... Farve is 38. Everyone talks about Farve as if he is an old man, but he is not... he could have several good years left. In 10 years when Brady and Peyton are done...the numbers willl balance out...and that is NOT taking anything away from Farve.

Brady and Manning are in the top 5 all time in QB Rating...

Top 4 QBs of all time: Brady, Manning, Farve, Montana...

JCF 01-13-2008 11:22 AM

Iyho

Sonics list of greatest authors of all time must look like this;

1) Hemingway *
2) John Grisham
3) Steven King
4) Ken Follet
5) Patricia Cromwell
6) Danielle Steele
7) Dan Brown
8) Joan Collins
9) Joan Collins" sister
10) Tom Clancy

* Not because Hemingway was such a great author, but because he was from Michigan

IMHO ;)
