The reason for my depressive mood lately

The Swedish Meteorological Institute has compiled the total hours of visible sunshine during the month of December. Turns out the last December rates among those with the lowest sun hours in half a decade. In a city not far from me they registered during the 744 hours of December only ...wait for it... 20 minutes of sun shine! Yes, TWENTY MINUTES out of 744 HOURS!!

Now, if that is not depressing enough, I suppose you Cali guys is more than eager to inform me that you had 20 minutes without sun shine..

I'm the same way when the sun isn't bright. Maybe that's why I don't like winters up here. I'm from Florida where winter is still bright and warm. I get depressed every winter up here.

Are you describing SAD? Have you ever tried one of those light boxes? Do they work?

My wife is Swedish.

Livi, I hear you loud and clear. After 23 years in Southern California, this last winter in Montana has been a real challenge for me. Its quite sunny in our area, but the reduced number of daylight hours is really affecting me. I'm not depressed.... far from it. Just YEARNING for more sunshine and to be outside riding motorcycles or digging in the dirt!

Livi- come to Miami! It is the single greatest decision I have ever made, except of course for my wife. I grew up in upstate NY, which has a similar depressing 9 months every year. Its not worth it, life is too short. Come to Miami. They probably would have a job for a Swedish fluffer too ;)

See my previous post.... go to a tanning bed. When I was in Munich one winter, going to a tanning booth really felt great and rejuvenating because of the warm bright lights.

Nah, forget Miami, come up here to N Florida - still have ocean with an hour drive east or west, plus all of the beautiful springs, etc.

North Florida is pretty nice. Just drove through there last week. Much quieter, also much more 'American South'. But we have more of a porn industry I bet, and Livi needs gainful employment.

Yeah, but Miami is just intolerable in the summer.

NICKG 01-14-2008 10:13 AM

get one of these "special" lights...you know the kind they use to grow http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...sun_smiley.gif"medicinal" marijauna. You could get s script easy i bet

sammyg2 01-14-2008 10:14 AM

dude! I totally know what you mean. It was cloudy here two days last month and I was like, totally bummed! ;)

rammstein 01-14-2008 10:15 AM

Everyone told me that, but it never really got to me. Then again, I am a skinny guy and I dissipate heat easily.

You gotta remember- everyplace in Miami is under A/C, and they don't mess around with it. Its kept very cold. If you are outside, there's always a pool, or an ocean.

you know the lack of light is the actual reason for the propensity for nordic races to be VERY white and have blond hair? nifty thing i learned long ago

Tim Hancock 01-14-2008 10:27 AM

Hmmm I have heard of folks being affected by dreary days, but I never gave it much thought. I guess I like sunny days, but I also like being outside when it is snowing profusely as it seems so peaceful. Maybe I have some Nordic blood in me.

Lots of suicide among folks living on the Oregon coast. They visit in the summer & fall, loving the scenery. That first winter of going weeks and months without seeing the sun get to them....

So, hypothetically, if I were to consider moving west - would I like Florida or California better? Pros and cons.
