I shave in the shower and use Dr Bonners Peppermint Castile soap.

I shave my face and the top of my head as well, so my razors get lots of miles put on them, but as soon as I can feel them starting to lose their blade, they go in the trash.

Replacement blades for shavers are more expensive than a bag of disposable razors. Also, even the two-blade units clog. I find that the disposable razors with one good blade work best. That blade must be better steel than the multi-blade units. They are usually yellow. One good blade beats five crappy ones set 1/2 mm apart. Very frustrating. You have to beat the razor against the sink to get the hair out. Again, single blade disposable razor.

I've read in the past that blades perform poorly when they load up with soap and other deposits. The cure suggested was to soak the blade in ....... Polident. Claimed to extend the service life by quite a bit.

The hair loading is probably a more common reason for tossing the blade.

I have an old toothbrush that I use to clean/clear the blades. Could that be speeding up the aging process?

Since I shave my bald head everyday as well, I have a lot of experience in this area.

I use the non battery Fusion. I have three of em. One for the shower for my head, used in conjunction with the Gilette Shaving Gel (blue stuff is a tube, looks kind of like tooth paste), one on the sink for my face, and one in my travel bag.

I also have a Braun self cleaning thing, that I use for a couple of quick passes on my face if I have been camping or off work for a couple of days and haven't shaven. Its much easier to use the razor after doing that.

Electrics just irritate my face

This is the other problem with using my fusion. Other than clogging (I'm going to try mule's method before i throw it out), the blades are stupid expensive. Although i will admit, they take quite a beating before the blades dull. Sometimes if my wife runs out of here cartridges she'll use my fusion, and generally a woman's leg hair will destroy a guys shaving razor quite quickly. These take the abuse multiple times if needed and are still sharp enough for me to use. But when they are officially done and i go to walmart to pick up more cartridges, and then i see the price of other cartridges, i think to myself "What the hell? Is this the porsche of shaving razors or what?" Anyhow, anyone know where i can get a stick on mirror for a shower? Maybe a mirror with some suction cups behind it?

You can check Ebay, Sharper Image, Brookstone...etc. Fog free is what ya want. Some even flow a portion of the shower water behind the mirror to maintain it's clarity.

thing is, these companies have us by the short hairs. they could easily use materials to build blades that would virtually last forever by today's standards..but what rick says is true - it's not the razors but the blades where they make their money. kinda like the movies..the real money is made in 'concessions'.

Would a straight razor work better, if you knew how to use it?

I just finished watching Sweeney Todd: The demon barber of fleet st last weekend, and now i'm terrified of straight razors especially near the neck area.

I've been using the Mach 3/Fusion and love it! The cost of blades is much higher than disposables, but my blades last longer (2x or 3x). I recall something about a new metal that was developed for the Mach 3's that helps keep the blades sharper for a longer period of time. Shaving in the shower (using a mirror like RickM mentioned) helps soften the beard, but it is a _itch when I travel because I don't bother with a portable version. If I use any other blade on my beard, my 5 o'clock shadow shows up sometime after lunch!

I do have one question.....Is there any difference between using just a Fusion blade compared to the vibrating handle? For some reason, I have been resisting switching from something I know works for me vs. paying extra for a vibrating blade.

Absolutely, it's not actually that hard to use either... but you have to take good care of the razor itself.

Use this after shaving with these.

The razors work because they don't give an ultra-close shave which reduces the chance that hair will get stuck.
Give them time to work. I used to have the same problem.

Hey, thanks. I've tried Tendskin, but not the razors. I've still got some Tendskin, will order the razor. How long do you figure for them to work?

And I do have both: ingrowns that can grow up to a half inch sideways, but it's the bits of shaven hair that somehow get back into my skin that's the killer. Even using 1/2 inch strokes. don't get it.
