Garrett stays in Dallas
 

Today is a good day for Cowboys fans. Jason Garrett has accepted an offer to stay in Dallas as the offensive coordinator and assistant head coach instead of accepting head coaching offers from both Balitmore and Atlanta.

I for one am happy he is staying, both for the Cowboys and for Garrett. Neither Baltimore or Atlanta is a team that is anywhere near winning in the next 2-3 years and that is what it would take to stay as head coach. I also think Garrett has a sense of unfinished business here in Dallas, if the Cowboys had gone to the Superbowl he may well have left. I think he wants to show he can win big with this group before moving on. Last, I think Garrett himself understands that he has only been a coach for 3 years. To go from QB coach to head coach in 4 years with no prior experience coaching is a meteoric rise, which may well have led to an equally spectacular failure.

Plus he is making serious $$$ (as much if not more than Phillips) and is the obvious successor to the premiere coaching job in the NFL.

Okay, now this not just because I'm a Packer fan since two of my rather uninformed sons became Boyz fans back when they went out to visit my brother in the '70's when he worked for Ross Perot in Dallas.

But let's be honest. When the Boyz offense was flying high and off the chart early in the season Jason was annointed as the next NFL offensive genius. And that's all fine and good. But with the way their offense played the last part of the season and especialy the fiasco against the Giants...Jason also must accept the responsibility for the failure.

A small child could see that the Cowboy wideouts were being given at least a 7-10 yard cushion at each snap. They could have had local boy Tony R flip them easy short (and possibly long) gainers at almost any time. Yet they seemed intent on pounding it into the line.

Then that final series was a joke. They had about 20 yards to go for a TD and they have arguably the best possesion receiver in the NFL...and they do not throw the ball to him at least 3 of those final 4 downs. Well, actually they didn't throw to him even twice...or once! Did Jason the genius go brain dead or what?

Surprises me that T.O. (or Jerry Jones) didn't go ballistic after that one. Why pay these guys $10 million a year and then not even attempt to let them make a play. Makes no sense to me. Whadda you think ND?

I think Garrett made the proper move. I think he sees himself as the heir to the throne in Dallas. I don't see much of a need for him to go somewhere else that could possibly jeopardize his chances at being the head coach after Phillips gets let go, which might be during, or after next season.

Phillips is asking for an early release, and Jason will be there when it happens. The Cowboys won't be very good next year, they won't win the East, but they might be a wild card team. I'm a Cowboy fan, and I don't like what I see in Phillips. I was not happy when he was brought in, and he lived up to my expectations. Any coach that doesn't have a tighter leash on his players before the playoffs doesn't deserve to be coaching. They sucked at the end of the season, they didn't need time off. What they needed was a swift kick in the arse, 2 a days up to kick off last Sunday.

Cowboys? Premiere? ROFL! :p

Agree that the offense took a dive late in the season and honestly that is probably why Garrett is still in Dallas. Like I said, I think he feels like he has unfinished business here. And he is smart enough to realize that he needs more experience before risking his reputation by becoming a head coach. This way he can continue to learn and grow while Wade takes all the heat...

As far as TO and the game:

Yes TO was forgotten during the 2nd half. I think some of this was because the Giants were getting ridiculous pressure on Romo. The O Line took a snooze, plain and simple. I'm not sure what happened because they had played very well all season. Is it just a coincidence that Sparano was essentially anointed as the Dolphins new HC at the end of the regular season and the O Line plays like crap the next game? I dunno. I actually liked using Barber more in the 1st half, he was chewing up huge chunks of yards, I think he had over 100 at halftime. Whether he faded late or not is up for debate, he certainly wasn't pushing the pile as much but the Giants made adjustments too. I kept waiting for the Giants D to begin to tire from all the pounding but it didn't seem to happen.

Matt: Man, such negativity!! I think the Cowboys will win the East next year and will again have the best record in the NFC. They have almost their entire starting lineup sewn up (except for Flozell the Walking False Start Adams) and should be able to upgrade their secondary through trade (Roy Williams) or the draft. As long as Jacque Reeves isn't at CB or nickelback it will be an improvement.

I was very disappointed in Phillip's press conference the day after the loss. He just kept repeating that the team went 13-4. Whoop-dee-do. He actually thought it was an accomplishment to "make the final 8". As long as the coach thinks it's ok to lose their first playoff game, how can the team not follow? There was no fire, no "This won't happen again", nothing. If the Cowboys don't make at least the NFC championship game next year Phillips will be gone.

Like it or not, the Cowboys franchise is worth the most $$, gets the most TV exposure, has the best marketing and has the most titles in the NFL.

They are the premiere franchise, hands down. They might not be the best team every year, but they are the crown jewel of the NFL.

Coaching the Cowboys is like managing the Yankees. Say what you will but both teams are a world onto themselves lead by a cult-o-personality and a very recognizable franchise / logo.

Actually, I think that I saw where the Redskins were the highest valued franchise at this time. Probably when da 'Boyz get their new digs finished they will take over #1.

But ya gotta agree that the Packers are certainly the most unique in not only the NFL but all of pro sports.

I think the Cowboys are already #1, maybe they are already factoring in the stadium...

I agree the Packers are a cool story, the only publicly held NFL franchise.

I am actually a bit pissed at the offensive calls during the Giants game.

I think TO was hurting more than they let on and not using him when fresh in the first half was a big mistake.

The Giants never got close to Romo in the 1st half, but they kept running the ball. Witten ended with 2 recs, Huard had none, Crayton 2.

All season long the Cowboys passed the ball and used the run to relieve the pressure. In the 1st half Romo had less yards than Barber.

In the playoffs (unless you are the Ravens) you win scoring points. The defense allowed 22 points on average this season... The Giants scored 50+ in the 2 reg season meetings.

It was unthinkable to win with less than 3TDs.

I think Garrett was way too conservative. I am sure he'll learn from this.

I am certainly happy he's staying.

As per next year the NFC East is becoming the toughest div in the NFC (as it has been for a long time). The Cowboys will be there...

This loss is a huge wakeup call for everybody. The players (most of them with NO playoff experience) were already dreaming of Arizona....

I am still pissed as most of my friends are from NY and this is going to be a long off season.

As per the Cowboys being the #1 team it may be... Certainly they are also the most hated team in the NFL, even though the Pats and Bilichick are closing in fast.

If I'm not mistaken, the teams that have won the most NFL Championships are the Green Bay Packers (12-time champions), Chicago Bears (9 times) and the New York Giants (6 times). Dallas, has won the league championship 5 times.

The Cowboys have won the most Superbowls (5 together with the 49ers) and have made the most superbowl appearances (8) since the merger in 1970.

If you include the years of the AFL vs NFL game (67-70) then the Packers joing Dallas and SF @5.

Before then (1920-1966) the Packers won in '29,'30,'31,'36,'39,'44,'61,'62.

Before then my gran-gran-granddad was the only one the know how to play football and won 17 titles playing against his brother....

Yeah, as Teo said, most people would use the post merger stats since when Green Bay won all those titles there were like 4 teams in the league, lol.

I am still so bitter for Sunday that I am going to pull for the Packers. Plus no matter who you support cannot NOT respect Favre... and it would not be THAT bad to see him play one last Superbowl.
