I'm a drummer.

Danny is good but not in the top 10 on the road. In fact, There isn't much he is doing that most good drummers couldn't do - his techneque is better than most but as for speed and chops? Nope, Terry B, Billy C and Neil P chew him not to mention at least 100 other studio drummers and every single snare on the DCI tour.

Help me understand why you think this cut is special? Am I missing something?

He did a 15 minute drum battle with Pat Mastelotto when I saw Tool last month. He's pretty damn good.

The complexity of sound. For me its about how things fit together. Hes a master at this probably the best of all time. He uses the whole kit as a instrument . It doesn't matter how fast someone is if they have no rhythm.

Neil will always be my hero, but Dennis Chambers is truly the best since Buddy. I've seen him about 10x. He never ceases to amaze me.

Danny is good, but in my opinion, not near the top of his league. Jared, you got it right, one of the best that ever played. Who's the drummer for Yanni? Been playing with him for a long time. Get him away from the music and he is awesome, very fast with great basic's. I love a good solo. My folks took me downtown Chicago many years ago to hear Gene Krupa, I'll remember it always, sat with us afterwords. That's what got me really into drums and I never regret it.

It's funny, when I first started to read this thread I thought that you were talking about Danny Seraphine -- who is one of my favorite drummers, even though his tempo keeping abilities have been a little suspect.

As "rock" music gets older and older, I often get the impression that it is getting more refined, although not necessarily better. The production gets better, the sound, everything gets tighter, but at the end of the day I keep getting the impression of "having heard it before". That seems to be the case with what I heard on that clip of Danny Carey. In some regards he could have been any number of great hard-rock or fusion drummers. The notes were "just so", the sticking impeccable! But where was the flow? the music as opposed to just the rhythm??

Getting back to my personal drumming inspiration, here's a cool piece...



From a piece like that he could easily switch to a piece like this...


And slide into a piece like this, where's he's driving the band forward with some pretty complex sticking and phrasing, but yet he still fits in as a supporting part as opposed to sounding like he's soloing over the band.



Now listen to the current incarnation of the band (without Terry Kath, Danny and Peter Cetera). Their current drummer (I don't know his name) is very good and rock solid. He can play all of the notes required -- but where's the flow? The feel? the music??

Speaking of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, they obviously pay a huge tribute in their music to this guy, and the countless nameless* drummers that have played in is oh-so-tight bands over the last 45+ years!



I got to see one of his concerts at "The Channel" in Boston back in the 80's. He was already getting up in the years, but played 45 minutes of every hour from 9:00 PM until about 3:00 AM, in spite of the fact that bars stop serving 1:45 and generally closed in Boston at 2:00 AM. I loved how his show was a 3-ring-circus the whole time, just like Parliament/Funkadelic would do in the 70's.

You're right, the music gets more "refined". The groups that get together today, for a reunion, just dont have the soul and rhythem they used to have; be it age, players,etc., but the "sound" is there. Hey, thats just us getting older and still enjoying the sound of the good music. Look at Jimmy Hendricks drummer at woodstock, a young 20ish guy that just wanted to play and didnt shiv-a-git what the world thought, that was on top of the world.

Clyde is SUPER funky. As is Bernard Purdie.

Tons of great drummers that would put the modern "i can play a zillion double kick notes a minute" metal drummers to absolute shame.

Chops are easy. Touch and feel are hard.

How do you get a drummer to stop playing? Put music in front of him

Thats so funny because I could'nt read a note of music, but I got into the concert band and marching band in HS, I know, big deal. But it comes down to touch and feel.

Not me but my 17 year old. Plays with the High school (award winning) Jazz band, also percussionist with their (award winning!) concert "Big" band.
He will be off to University to study music next year (If he survives his Gap year in Europe......).
After several years with his $400 starter kit, as promised we bought him a good kit. Yamaha oak custom.
We had to factory order the colour.
Then coincidentally John "JR" Robinson was doing a charity concert in Calgary the same time as they arrived. As we had ordered the exact same set that he plays, they asked if he could borrow them for the concert & they will knock 15% off the price! We took the deal!
Unfortunately we had to give back the signature edition snare when ours turned up a couple of weeks later!
We did score some realy good spare heads though!





p.s. At this very moment we have 6 menbers of the band at the house all with their instuments .... However, they are playing "Rock Band" on the XBox... go figure....

was forced to read drum music at an early age and play a stupid ass rubber pad so i wouldnt annoy anyone. this is grade school and in the grade school band. then we started a band.........and we were damn good! could actually play 3 beatles songs. we had creative differences, the lead gitar player met an oriental gal and the band then went to hell.........


gave up drums sold ludwig set as a freshman when i learned about gasoline and perfume.........i was good......very good. once again it all went to hell.


fast forward to my 42nd year of life. one day while repairing drywall and listening to stereo an ephiphany happened! i stopped drywalling and went to bizarreguitar store and dropped big bucks on mapex 2nd from top of the line kit. then dumped more big bucks on 7 zildjiaan cymbo's and wood and alum sticks 5A and 5B's and the rest is history..................its all gone to hell again!

can clear my house out of people in about 3 seconds flat now with the noise!

i can move objects on shelves upstairs and downstairs!

i can actually play quite a few songs now.

i dont care what anyone thinks.

i cant hear NOTHING while stereo cranked and while i have headphones on.............for hours!

i have actually lit quite a few fires using my broken sticks as kindling.

i have wasted many a pair of alum. sticks.

i have decimated a few drum heads all but my floor tom tom. went right thru my floor kick one night..........that was a trip!

i can actually keep a beat........well somedays if im in the mood.

my right hand right brain, have creative differences with my left brain left hand.

the cops have never been called to my house. it pays to have a large chunk of property w/out a lot of folk around.

beer flows like a RAGING RIVER some nights! and usually thats when im most creative and sound the best!

bottomline its fun.............and its therapy!

next kit will be yamaha studio kit. love the sound.

Lot's of greats out there (me excluded) but my personal favorite is Neil Peart. Not because they're Canucks, but his flow and compilations are unmatched.

Check out Rush Live in Rio, and the drum solo in it....

I was able to see him raw before all the real electronic "aids" came in, and his kit was HUGE, and man did he use it all
