What is the "POLY" in polygraph?

I can't find it anywhere.

the 01-17-2008 08:55 PM

Ummm, "many?"

Moses 01-17-2008 08:57 PM

"poly" means "many". A polygraph measures many things; heart rate, galvanic skin response and some other stuff, I think.

KevinP73 01-17-2008 08:58 PM

Ok...is that Latin? Greek?

the 01-17-2008 09:00 PM

From the Greek; polus = "much"

Would you like to hear it used in a sentence?

KevinP73 01-17-2008 09:04 PM

no thanks, that part I already got.

Like polygamy....

Poly=many

gamy=headaches

Porsche-O-Phile 01-18-2008 05:29 AM

Kind of like:

poli (or poly) = many
tics = tiny disease-ridden, blood-sucking insects

Drdogface 01-18-2008 06:37 AM

Tough crowd...

It's kinda like when Steve Martin was hosting the Academy Awards and he got to the "Cinematography" category. He said, okay folks this is an important award...we all know what cinama is...and tography........................................

And he walked off.

It also pays to listen closely to words. Once, when a new girlfriend told me she was a thespian, I got all excited, suggested a threesome and she dumped me.

LOL Reminds me of my Big Fat Greek Wedding :)

I watched that at my dentist's and almost got my gums polished from laughing in the midst of a polish.

Polyflatus?

masraum 01-18-2008 11:41 AM

Main Entry:
poly-
Function:
combining form
Etymology:
Greek, from polys; akin to Old High German filu many, Sanskrit puru, Latin plenus full — more at full

1: many : several : much : multi- <polychotomous> <polygyny>2 a: containing an indefinite number more than one of a (specified) substance <polysulfide> b: polymeric : polymer of a (specified) monomer <polyethylene> <polyadenylic acid>

If you search for "prefix poly" it's really easy to find.

poly is a common prefix
polytheism, polygamy, polymorphic, polydactyl, etc....
