I worked for the "PC" division of IBM for 10 years and sold a bunch of thinkpads. They're still the only laptop I'd buy.

I absolutely HATE touchpads. I can't see how people use them. Trackpoint is sooo much better.

Spoke to one of my friends still at Lenovo. The X300 is supposed to be available this quarter.

i am no longer impressed with lighter-thinner computers.

i want something i can dump a cup of coffee on without it costing me $500. i want something that can survive falling off a desk.

Along with standing on them, I used to dump water "into" the keyboard of thinkpads, while they were running, during presentations. They used to be sealed/"membraned" so no liquid could penetrate through the keyboard to the important stuff.

Sounds like you want one of those Toshiba Tough Books.

I agree, they need to start making computers TOUGH. Being that the sole purpose to use a PORTABLE COMPUTER is in the fact that it's PORTABLE, it's therefore subject to much harsher treatment than a desktop. But no one wants to make them stronger. Just lighter.

Until a customer drops it, breaks the screen and the HD screws itself and looses $100K worth of data. Then they want tough, not light...

I like the Trackpoints, like pads as well.

Considering the navigation features built into pads these days to me they win hands down.

Tough books are nice.

To date I have dropped every one of my laptops several times.
Think it's common knowledge what brand I carry. They all have dents and battle worn cases. Had one sitting on a table, dog ran by, tripped over the power cord, box flew 10 ft across the room before landing on a tile floor. CD that was in the drive was still playing. No damage.

The better boxes will come with accelerometers built in that sense this kind of stuff and park the drives before a hit takes place.

I've had two Thinkpads. Great machines. Fantastic keyboards. However, Macs are better.

My 12" powerbook has been dropped/fallen a bunch of times. Bent all over the place. Still runs like a champ.

I don't get the track-eraser thing. Have you guys ever used the newer Mac trackpads? Having it understand multiple finger gestures rocks...

Toughbook or Itronix

Ive had a toughbook CF72 for years.. it has been dropped, used in nasty weather, secured to the floor of various cars for data logging..

I once left the toughbook on top of a car while I rooted around the shop to find a tool, only to come back and find the toughbook upside down on the floor... still running...

Check ebay.... for about $400 you can get into a very rugged and capable laptop

i'm a mac person.so pretty much rules them out.

stuffed my old ibook in the saddle bag and headed to alaska. the computer held up fine. got home a spilled something on it. major pain in the ass getting that fixed. i can walk into any wal mart and buy a camera to use while scuba diving. is it too much to expect a computer that can survive a cup of coffee.

the computer is not a woman. it is a tool. i don't care how thin it is.

errr, many ways and many times :D

Slipped on ice once, slammed the mother to da ground. Heart almost stopped. Bottom shell is pretty rough ... battery is wacky but I was going at a good clip and the slam must have been hard.

My powerbook keeps me here still today :D

lolo, let's not count the few other times including at least 1 meter falls in it's carry bag which isn't that good ...

Yes, I think Lenovo could challenge Apple, easy ... anybody can. Problem is that nobody else is like Apple, yet, and nobody else (outside of hacks) run OSX. So, no sale with me. Too bad, I would consider another brand if OSX was on it.
