What is the best vacuum?

I have hardwood floors throughout the house, and have runner rugs. I need a good vacuum that will work on both. I currently have a stick vacuum, but it doesn't seem to work that well.

I want a GOOD vacuum, perhaps a GOOD stick vacuum. Any suggestions?

My little Oreck works great and has attachments for floors/rugs:

Has a shoulder strap, so you can look like one of the Ghostbusters while doing your cleaning. Just don't pay too much. Search E-Bay for deals.

Best Vacuum for under $500?

I have this Oreck and the small canister to match. I like it.

We just bought a meile and it's been great so far. I'll admit, it was an insane (and I mean insane) amount of money for a vac, but it does do a great job. One nice feature is adjustable suction, so you can go full blast on wall to wall, but then tone down the suction for smaller rugs that would ordinarily get sucked into the rollers. Also good feature for drapes, etc. Check our thier website, they make very nice stuff, but it's not cheap...great warranty though and from what I've heard, excellent customer service if anything goes wrong. Plus, it's german!

i find sweeping with a good ol fashioned broom to be preferable to a vacuum on hardwood floors. vacuums can bang into walls and trim and take longer.

Being in charge of the house, I bought the Dyson. I do not think the inventor 'even ever' vacuum'd a house in his life. The attachment are, in my opinion, no good.

I just use it to vacuum. It does the job.

We checked with commercial cleaning firms before we purchased our new vac. One company has a contract for many locations on the local Air Force base. They use Simplicity machines. Check them out, the construction is great, and kills everything else we ever tried (including some VERY expensive "high end" units)...These are never sold in "large box" stores, rather they are a specialty shop item.

Our Electrolux canister vacuum cleaner has been pretty good, better than any of that Red Devil junk my wife kept buying over and over again.

You don't need a good vacuum, you need a wife.

I have hardwood and use the Miele about every day. Damn cats and their litter. Way easier than sweeping, quicker in my hands, and much less dust. But ymmv...

I just open the front door and the slideing door in back and let the wind blow through the house...that takes care of just about everything.

And she uses a Miele

Alright, I use the Miele, but the dogs stay on the porch and the only pics on my phone are old girlfriends

Edit: About 50/50 hardwood and rugs, plus lots of tile. Miele is more better

We have that top rated Eureka in the Consumer Reports chart above and it works awesome. My wife has a vacuuming addiction and has worn out two vacuums and one steam cleaner in the last three years. This Eureka is pretty tough and picks up a lot of dirt.
