Terrible work schedule?
Ok here is my work schedule here in the US, so TDY military schedules don't come into play when I consider a terrible work schedule.
I depart my house say on a Monday at O' Dark Early...this is posting day. Work anywhere from 30 - 130 miles away (at least this is where I eat/sleep) 12 hour days, on alert during down time. On the 5th day (Friday in this instance)...I return home...this is recovery day. Now I have what they call 5 days off...but most of the time it's 3 at best because of training and appointments here at home station. So basically I am away from home 6 months of the year. So what is your schedule? |
This weeks schedule: I commute 1.25hrs each way to work
Monday left home 7:30AM got home 6:30PM Tuesday left home 7:45AM will get home 12:30AM Wednesday leave home 8:00AM will get home 1:30-2:30AM I hope Thursday OFF Friday leave home 2:00PM get home 1:00AM Saturday OFF Sunday leave home 8:00AM get home 6:00PM Not a bad week for me, I may just get some sleep. |

I don't feel so bad about my schedule now.
|
My dad is a consultant so he travels every week:
Monday- Out the door by 4:45am to catch a flight somewhere (he has been in Topeka, Kansas for about 9 months now) Tuesday-Thursday he works anywhere from 10-14 hours a day, then catches a flight home thursday night, getting back between 8pm and midnight Friday-10 hours from home Saturday/Sunday- A least a few hours total between the 2 days Did I mention that he is about at the end of his rope and considering a change? |
My personal 'best' is for two years in a row more than 300 days a year away from home (311 and 323 to be exact) ... with many other above 250 ....
Now I am 'lucky' if I travel once a month ... and not complaining at all!! |
300 days...christ thats impressive
|
My work schedule:
M: 7:00 - 4:15 T: 7:00 - 4:15 W: 7:00 - 4:15 TH: 7:00 - 4:15 F: 7:00 - 3:00 one week, OFF the other week Sa: OFF Su: OFF It is RARE for me to work any extra hours, especially since I was promoted to exempt a year ago. ;) Did I mention that my commute is about 5 minutes, 7 minutes if both of the traffic lights are red--and I carpool with my wife? Yeah, I have a cushy job. You don't hear me complaining, ever. |
I have a tough comute everyday...I have to walk from the bedroom to the office in the front of the house with a detour by the kitchen to get a cup of coffee.
|
My dad's in Japan once a month for two weeks at a time.
I think I'll stick to being a lowly college student. |

I am an exempt employee as well, so all those extra hours don't amount to much... I'm supposed to get 'comp time,' but when?!? I've got 5 WEEKS of comp time built up since last July.... Sorry, I don't mean to turn this into a "work sucks" rant thread... -Z-man. |
Wow. I'm up between 7-8, breakfast, play with 1 1/2 yr old ball of energy (aka daughter), at work around 8-8:30. Real ***** of a commute - 13 stairs. 11:30-1 lunch break, play with kid, feed her lunch, down for nap, 1:00-3:30ish back to work, 3:30 (whenever daughter wakes up) to 4ish play, 4-6 back to work, 6-7 dinner, 7-8 work 2nd job, 8-9 bed time (daughter's, not mine), 9-whenever I drop (usually 11-12) work 2nd job.
We're sharing child-care duties while my wife works 1/2 days (she's an elementary school teacher) and I work around everyone else's schedule. So far it's working fairly well. When work is busy (I run a small business ($$$) + a music career (no $$$)) I do get a bit stressed with lack of time available for work, but the flipside is no daycare and I get to spend a lot more time with our daughter than most fathers would, especially working 2 jobs. But man, commuter traffic can be bad - 2 cats, kid toys... Though working at home does get lonely often. |

I get up around 5:00, get to work 5:30, usually leave 5:00 to 6:00, home 15 min later. When things are busy I leave 7:00. When they aren't I leave 3:00-4:00. Don't work weekends. Travel about 1 week a month, on average, usually to NYC or SF.
|
Last day of each month, I have to walk 325 ft. up the driveway to the mailbox for my retirement check....Before retirement, Mon-Fri 0700-1500 hrs.....On call 24-7 unless out of town...
|
wake up at around 730, breakfast with the family, kids leave for school by 8, I'm out the door by 9 or 9:15, have an 8 minute commute, kids are home from school by 3, they do homework until 4 or 430, I'm home by 4 or 430.
except on Fridays, when I'm usually home by 230 or 3, so we can get 9 holes in, practice baseball or goof off. |
7 days on, 7 days off. 14 hour duty days. The 7 days on (away from home) part sux, but the 7 days off is really cool, and add in vacation, and I basically work 5 months a year ~ it just takes a year to do it!
(of course I still work at the body shop on my off days during the school year, but thats more as a hobby.) |
If we let college = work, and home = myIL_House then....
Monday-Friday I'm up at 8AM, and in bed at 2:30, some times as late as 4 or 5, and never before 1:30. I'm up around 18 hours of the day. I'm in lecture for 17 hours a week, and spend another ~34 hours a week studying or doing outside projects related to my courses (eg, programming math apps.). So, I'm up for...90hours/workWeek and am doing something work related for 51 of them. Then, if we consider that being at college is not being at home (see definition above) I'm away from home 9 months out of the year. ***Mostly I'm just yanking your chains, so keep your flames to yourself:) I realize college != work in the strict sense of the word. However, staying consistently on the Dean's List (GPA >= 3.5) is pretty good for me, someone who never before studied and took the ACT drunk and reeking of booze. *****Of course, what this also means, is that if I get drunk, or get some cratch (yea right) any time Monday-Friday, I'm getting drunk and/or getting cractch while at work. Hehehehe..... |
I never quite know. On W/F and every other Monday, I'm in the office by 8:30am. On Tue/Thu I have to leave by 5pm to pick up my son from school. Beyond that I only *have* to be in the office if I have meetings. Travel is thankfully minimal...a couple trips a year. If I want to ditch out during the day I can and do.
But I also am often sending work email at 1am on any given day of the week, and can spend hours editing late into the night, writing, or just thinking about projects. So depending on how you count "work" I either do 20 or 80 hours a week. |
