Goose Gossage Elected to Baseball's Hall of Fame
Well, it has finally happened. I doubt this thread will get many reponses but that's okay. CJ will probably be the most enthusiastic...IF he's enthusiastic - Goose was a big Yankee star (among other teams). Gossage didn't have the numbers that today's one-inning-only relievers/closers have. In his day, he frequently came in in the 7th inning and with the bases loaded. That's why he has so many decisions for a true reliever. He was workhorse. Today, we'd say he was overpitched. I was always a baseball fan, always a Dodgers fan but only truly got interested as an adult in the mid/late 70's. Right about the time Goose was coming into his prime. When the Yankees played the Dodgers twice in the Series in the late '70's, Gossage was a primal force.
To those younger than me, I can't portray how fearded he was. He seemed to be huge, a fireballer and with that Fu Manchu mustache he was scary in those days. He came in looking like he'd kill you with an inside pitch. Very glad to see him honored. Sad to see Jim Rice did not get elected in his next to last year of eligibility. ![]() Mixed feelings on MacGwire not getting ANY more votes than last year. I guess if you wanna dance, you gotta pay the piper as the expression goes. But back to Goose. I am very happy to see his induction.

Goose deserved it, absolutely.... but so does Jim Rice, and he's running out of time...

Goose was awesome. Big, mean and intimidating. He came to the Yankees after Sparky Lyle won the Cy Young and promptly made everyone forget about him. He threw gas. Everyone knew what was coming and they still couldn't hit him.
He had the most interesting quote a few weeks ago. When asked about roids he said (and I am paraphrasing) "I can't say I wouldn't have taken them too. I am that competitive." Rare candor if you ask me. Anyway, too bad on Rice. He played too long with the BoSox. ![]() And F MacGwire that friggin' juice monkey, "I'm not here to talk about the past" piece of cheating, high fiving Sammy Sosa, deca, d-ball, hgh, creatine cheating SOB. /me, nah, I'm not bitter.

I'm glad to see Goose get in. I think Rice deserves it also. They were before my time, but i seen alot of old taped games, i think alot of the guys from the late 70's early 80's are gonna get screwed, the stats then just weren't what they were during any other baseball peroid.
Now Mcgwire really hurts me, he was my fav player when i was just starting to get into sports(playing and watching). I lived way out in the country so i had to stay up for the late news to see sports scores, but i stayed up to see what he did. I had everything of his you could think of. Part of me says he hit homers before he hot huge, but how many were from the "juice". The only good thing i can say is that he and Sammy brought the game back, baseball in the mid 90's after the strike was dead. |
