What specifically about North Dakota? The fact that it's mindnumbingly cold? Or that new technology allowed development of the Bakken oil field which extended the proven commercial reserves of oil and gas by orders of magnitude and that the flow of natural gas from the Bakken and similar fracking zones in Texas lead to cheap, clean natural as that is primarily responsible for reducing the US' carbon emissions beyond any potential treaty's goals and more than any other industrialized country in recent years?

So just how many humans can the planet sustain? There must be a limit and some have guessed around 11 Billion. That's the max number of people the planet can physically sustain, taking into account the amount of space needed for crops and animals. We are currently around 7.8 Billion.

I believe this may be the greatest threat, simply too many people. If you want to reduce the carbon footprint we may just need to reduce the number of footprints....

Ultimately nature may do this on its own if we don't start planning and if that happens it wont be pretty.

The issue isn’t the number of people. If a space to provide shelter is all we were focusing on, there is enough room for all of us. The trouble begins when we start measuring the ecological footprint of this burgeoning population – the amount of biologically productive land and water a person requires for producing the resources it consumes.

Back in the late 1900's my biochemist high school classmate/college roommate would occasionally talk about the horror of some kind of weird new flu-like virus that could pop up in the most populatd part of the planet. Said new virus could have an undetectable incubation period in the host who is infectious for a week or two before they show signs or symptoms. Maybe that virus would be able to survive in the environment for not minutes, nor hours nor days but possibly weeks. No known cure.

Then we'd usually go out for beers.
