Spy Satellite Threatens Earth

I was reading this article in the SF Chronicle and someone mentioned the 'stroid in their posted comments.

Not likely, but it is interesting that the 'stroid was found in Oct '07 and wasn't determined to miss until Dec.

We hear about it a week before it whizzes by?

What do you think would have been the response if "they" determined it was a 100% hit?

They wouldn't tell us if it was determined to be a hit...why should they?

I wonder what the "official" policy is on what actions are to be taken if a meteor of significant size was verified to strike earth?

Anything in the public record from the US, EU, UN, etc?

I've seen some TV shows on various studies about how to destroy/divert a big earthbound rock . . .

Best,

Kurt

Depends on the "they" I think. Lots of "stuff" has been discovered by non-government entities and even individuals. Might be hard to keep a big "event" quite.

Best,

Kurt

The ACLU would sue to change legislation in retaliation to the gov't screwing up.

I am assuming the world's space faring countries could get some rockets into space relatively quick?

But, how long would it take?

Maybe ICBMs already in silos?

I remember from a Discover Channel type show that meteorites can have quite varied compositions; trying to blow one up with a nuke could just create a bunch of smaller but still species ending rocks.

I wonder if there is a plan to "push" a big space stone off course?

Best,

Kurt

my only worry is that it might be difficult to track down all of your garages to score enough parts to build one good 911

Let's see .... three quarters of the earth covered with H20. So probably a BIG azz splash somewhere? But probably a smaller tsunami effect than the terrible rising seas caused by global warming that will, in 10 years (by some predictions), flood ALL the coast lines of the world because of rising sea levels.... (yawn)

I worry more about what shirt to put on each day.
