Hammond Drives a Renault F1 car

Richard Hammond of Top Gear recently took a Renault F1 car out for a spin. Pretty awesome opportunity... These guys really do have the best job ever. On another note... I sure miss the sound of the V10s!

good gawd. I was giggling like a school girl when I co-drove Jim Copp's 340hp 200# GT2 car for a 40 minute race stint at Buttonwillow. An F1 car and I'd need to be institutionalized...

Totally cool.

I’ve always wondered what would happen if you were to put a novice (like me) into an F1 car. I can’t imagine taking a car through a 150MPH corner at 3.5 G’s. I’d probably think the car would be ready to fly off the track at 75 MPH and 1.5 G’s. What he said about not going fast enough to get heat in the tires and brakes was interesting, and that going a little faster wouldn’t help, as he’d still have cold tires and brakes, but would be going faster. I guess these cars need to be driven hard.

That bit about the engine effectively being seized when cold was interesting, as well.

I love watching stuff like this that puts a persepctive on how incredible F1 cars are, and more important, the drivers who can do what they do in them. Simply astounding.

Let's put Hammond in a Nascar Cup car to see how well he does. I think he'd do much better as a rookie as there's about a million things less to do. Brake...turn left...brake...turn left...etc.

Did you ever see the Honda S2000 commercial where Michael Andretti is a driving instructor? He keeps telling the kid to turn left and eventually the kid says "Can we turn right"? Michael says, "Why would you want to do that"?

Brilliant! Really makes you appreciate the what fantastic drivers the F1 circus has. I am not sure about my English, but at one point it sounds like Hamster is trying to explain how that car is faster than his thought processes.
