For those with odd names, like myself, you might want to try using the non-Americanized spelling (for me Quisgard became Qvistgaard, Kvistgaard, etc).

Yup came over from Hungary and Sicily. Let me see if I can find the names in the database.

I wish I knew when my Fathers family came to the USa, it was never told to me, and they are all gone now save my dad(i don't think he knows either). My Mothers family came over on the Mayflower...(ironic considering my stance on religion)

It turns out that these Ellis Island Records are only until 1924.

Our family (including me!) arrived in June 1949, and therefore we're not in that data base. But we have our family's official papers from Ellis Island a few years ago, when they had such a service.

I'm so glad that our family talked about it, that we were part of the immigration, and that we know who we are.

I hope that we can pass this on to our children.

Hungary as well - 1904 - found my Great Grand Father in seconds

I tried to look up "Snowman" but there wasn't any record.....

I've got a super unusual name, but it's next to impossible to find anywhere.

If you do a search at either "ancestry.com" or "genealogy.com" for "masraum" you find my family or my fathers half siblings or a few ancestors.

I called one of the half "uncles" that I've never known to see if they knew anything (they grew up in the area with my ggrandfather). I did find that I have a few more relatives named "masrum". But through basic internet searches the trail goes pretty cold. One of these days I'm going to try to figure out what our surname was in Europe. My family on my dad's side is from Germany, but the last name points possibly to a French surname. There was an area of Germany that was French at some point, so I suspect that maybe that's what's going on. I just haven't ever taken the time or money to pursue it further.

I still have my grandpa's passport and ellis island papers. Let me scan them, a great peice of history.

Nope. My ancestors were here much earlier. One was a bodyguard for Gen. Washington. We still have his sword. The rest came from Norway long before Ellis Island.

My mothers family kept track of that stuff and passed it down through generations. She (my mother) may even have the ticket stubs for the boat ride over from England on the Lyon in late 1630 early 1631. Maybe it's a copy of the manifest. I don't know which it is.

Anyway, it turns out that at least one of my ancestors was a real rebel rouser. When he came here, he thought it would be a novel idea to separate church and state! Well, some of the blokes didn't like that. Some say he moved along, history says he was forced along, too tough to call really. Which ever it might have been, it matters not.

Eventually, he got his own dirt and settled in with twelve of his best buddies. They even built a baptist church. Some people say it might even be the first of its type on this side of the pond. Later on, he and some other dudes turned the place into a colony. They say it finally turned into a state, but I don't know if I can believe that. If it is, it's pretty damned small.

This is only hearsay, and the only proof I've been shown is a serving spoon with RW engraved on it.

Strange how a family moves around. Moved here from Hungary, then to Brazil. Now runs a offshore helicopter service to the oil platforms. Ahhh I love history.
