k9handler, college football, and a blackout

k9handler,

I just took a look at the www.b40huckers.com/ncaa/ link in your signature, which calls for a "'boycott' [of the] the 2008 College Football season."

I just finished reading "Bowl, Polls, and Tattered Souls" by Stewart Mandel, and he spent a chapter on the bowl picture, recounting history and explaining the roadblocks to a playoff in Div 1-A (oh, sorry, BCD or whatever the hell they call it now).

I'm sure we've all heard the arguments for and against a playoff, so I won't go into them.

I would like to add my $0.02 to the blackout idea, though.

I would NEVER boycott the regular season. There is nothing more exciting (IMHO) than the regular season of college football. Big games every week. Big upsets every week. Rivalries dating back 100 years. 80,000 screaming fans for an early season game.

I would be HAPPY to boycott the bowl season. A game that takes place over a month after the season ends? A team plays without its coach that just got fired despite a winning record? The MicroPC.com bowl? A 6-6 team gets to play in the post season? Ugh. Give me a break.

PV

thanks for taking a look. I agree that the games through the year are great, we just feel that year after year we all seem to be pissed when the BCS picture is set and yet nothing changes.
So if a good number of fans would take a stand (even just not watching the bowl games) we might be able to make them change it.

Thanks for helping spread the word.

6-6 teams play in bowls because we have too many "toilet" bowls...

Did you know that the AP and UPI (precursor to the USA Today/Coaches poll) used to submit their final poll votes as soon as the regular season ended? I didn't until recently. I actually like the idea! Take the bowl games out of the equation completely!

agree, a 6 team playoff seems like the best solution.

Maybe a 4 team or an 8 team playoff, but I don't think 6 will work to well. I mean, the first round will be fine, but a championship game with 1.5 teams playing each other will only add to the confusion .

no....

seed 6 vs seed 5, winner plays seed 2 in next round

seed 4 vs seed 3, winner plays seed 1 in next round

and then a championship game between them.

I hear ya, but I'd prefer starting with an even # of teams for a couple of reasons. First, I think giving teams an extra week off (or month per the current bowl system) REALLY throws a bunch of teams "out of sync" from their season long routine thus leading to sub-par performances. Second, having seeds 3-6 play an "extra game" isn't quite a "level playing field" (either way) when they are eventually matched up against seeds 1 & 2. I'd much rather see an 8 or 4 team playoff, but either way 8, 6, or 4 would be a LOT better than the bowl system that been somewhat of a joke as long as I can remember (i.e. forever).

Clever idea.

For now, I say go back to the traditional bowl matchups and play a +1.

The first playoff system, I guarantee you, will not have the Pac-10 and Big-10 conferences, but eventually they'll come around.

very true and I did post a link to a +1 article on yahoo.
Basically I want to see people discuss and make a move on what is a very broken system, so spread the word and let the fans decide.

a 4 team +1 format would work...but there would still be some teams on the outside looking in that would be pissed that they couldnt play.

However, let's be honest...usually each year there are only 4 really TOP teams left at the end of the year... but how do you choose those 4?

if you chose 8 teams, well this year Hawaii would have made it based on their undefeated record....well Hawaii and their QB were completely exposed as a mediocre team playing in an easy league by Georgia... so again, how do you pick the 8 teams?

There never will be an ideal format, because it is football.... not basketball...however at this point, having the top 4 teams play a 2 game playoff seems to be the easiest format to implement and also very lucrative.

yes this year Hawaii showed what was expected, but as we know a team in the playoffs just may pull off an upset and win the big one. NFL wildcard teams for example scramble just to make the post season and some even win it all.

The BCS doesn't even give them a chance so any playoff system would be better in my opinion.
