Why Am I worried?????????????????
 

well, I have to go in for some very minor surgery in the morning, very simple, in & out, but I will be Put Under. and even though I have had bigger work done in the past, I'm very nervous about this. Now, I'm not new to this, as a bike racer, things happen, and had to be repaired, but looking at my luck in the last few years, and how not only this year started, but this week:eek:, I must admit, I am a bit nervous. friends of mine who have gone in for something simple, had the worst results, one of our brothers here on PPOT, also had a major loss for something routine. I don't have a wife or any kids, like Tabs, I just have my mother, so I made a list of my pass words and a list of where my cars & parts are stored (I haven't let any one person know where everything is located ) and have made it clear what goes where. My mother has no clue to the value or even how much I really have (this is more than Porsche, included vintage bikes, guns, Coke, gas station & other odd collectibles.
I don't know why I'm posting this, other than I am worried, my blood pressure has been much higher than norm lately and my stress levels have been off the charts too.
As stated before, going under the knife is not a new thing for me, this should be an easy deal (the Doc said 2 weeks should be enough to recoup) but, I have lost friend's & family during simple procedures :( and for the first time, am worried:eek:

My Dad had to go in for something minor a few years ago. He called be the day before and was worried sick. His went off without any issue. I can guess you sound about the same as he did. I can relate, a bit.

Don't fret, my friend. You'll be fine. It's a normal feeling. I'd take you there if I were local. Afterwards, I'd take advantage of your medicated state, then twist you for some Porsche parts in exchange for the pics. :D

D'oh! That was supposed to be the secret! Dammit! I was always bad at keeping secrets.

Well, we have had our "differences" on this board but I wish you luck in the AM with your surgery.

Besides, anyone who is a bike racer can't be all bad! I flat-tracked Triumphs and BSA's probably before you were born. Never got into the dirt bike stuff which is probably what you do.

I was still very young (and certainly indestructable) when I saw a guy go off a short track near Rocford, IL and hit a telephone pole (safety was not a big issue back then) and he DIED. And that was the end of my brief racing career!

Now for the surgery, I have a story that you might find funny and lift your spirits. Like I've said, I ran a bar near Chicago and worked in factories all my life but I'm scared as hell of doctors and hospitals. So a few years ago I find out that I have to have "minor" prostate surgery. I'm questioning the heck out of the doctor and finally he tells to quit all the worrying since it's really no big deal. I responded that it may be no big deal to him but that it's probably THE most important thing in the world to me right now. He laughed like hell. And I came out of it fine.

And so will you.

It's totally normal to be a bit nervous about such things. Anesthesia is much more advanced than perhaps you think. You'll be fine....trust me...I'm a Doc....well, a Vet anyway.. You'll still able to lift your leg on a tree :D

You'll be posting the same pics in random pics and pics you took, by the afternoon. I have the same issues you do with being put under. Good luck!

Yes, we do have a few issues, but being that you have run bars (something I know a bit about & can relate too) and your location (my best friends widow is from WI, and her family are some of the best people that I have been lucky enough to know, and like you, we don't agree on much when it comes to politics, but I love those people!!) and she just got back, with my new supply of local beers I have looked forward to drinking a few with you..
This is not the 1st time that I have gone under the knife, just the first time that I worried about it. I don't know, going to 2 funerals this week (one today)and having my blood pressure (according to the Doc) back up in the not happy range, crashing the Jag on Monday, ex being such a user *****, not even saying thank you for her birthday gift and fighting the city. Can I win???

In the last 2 years, I have lost the people & more who were closest & most important to me. Now I feel alone, and even though I'm a fighter (ask anyone who knows me) I'm still worried. even though as others here have stated, I have nothing to worry about. Fact is, the first time I lost some one close (my mother's secritaries daughter, (her little girl was my little girlfriend, we were 5 years old) died from a very simple common procedure, and that has never left me. Is it my time, who knows, if it is, oh well, if not I'll be posting either a few rare Porsche bits from my collection or chicks that would get the marrued guys in trouble.

Don't worry even a little bit about the anesthesia. The new meds are so incredibly safe and short acting and the monitoring is so complete... you'll be FINE.

I had shoulder reconstruction last year. I had a fair number of concerns prior to my surgery. Not a single worry was related to anesthesia. You'll be just fine.

Interesting subject; I have a life-long friend who is an anesthesiologist. When I moved out here 25 years ago, he was a surgical resident at UCLA Harbor, then he decided that he wanted to make the real money.;)

He went into sports medicine, (he'd been a pro athlete), and opened a small chain of pain management clinics back in MN. plus wrote a book or two. He's stupid-rich now. Moses is of course correct about modern anesthesia in ORs, but I remember my buddy telling me that once he really learned about sedation he would never let a dentist put him under and considered people crazy who do.

So as long as you're going to a real hospital, you are going to be fine. :)

ask for versed before they put you under. I remember when my dad had some minor surgery a few years back, he was nervous as all get out. Then they came and gave him a pre-op shot of verced. I sat there and watched the stress turn to rosy-cheeked joy.

Narcotics good....

That's funny what you said about narcotics.

One of my 4 boys was a real terror and a true tough guy even tho he only weighed about 190. One of those naturals per athletics and sports who could bench nearly 400.

So when he gets to be about 30 he has to have knee surgery. He also is afraid of being put under so he tells them only a local if they could and that he could handle it. Docs didn't agree but they did it. He had a hell of a time during the operation.

Later his older brother had to have about the same thing done and Tim told him "If I ever have it again I will not only take the drugs they offer but I'll ask them for everything that they can give me!"

Sounds like a perfectly normal reaction (at our age particularly). You will be fine.

I'll keep you in my prayers. There's no such thing as "minor surgery" when you are the patient!

You are not alone even though it might feel that way at times. Had to laugh as I was having the same thoughts about "what would happen with all of this stuff and who in the world knows what its really worth" just yesterday. Maybe its time to reorganize priorities in life in some areas. Have lost 4 very good friends in the last 4 months and it does make one think about whats "really important" in life a bit more often.

Go to the procedure with someone who can drive you home and things will work out. Going under has gotten a lot better in recent years and you will be home safe and sound before you know it.

Just went through the same thing myself. Inguinal hernia repair. Was very nervous. Got a shot in the IV while waiting and completely relaxed. Was chatting and joking with the OR staff as I slid onto the Op table. Next thing I knew, I was waking up in recovery. In at 8am, home by lunch time.

You'll be fine.


We'll be waiting for your editorial comments on Super Tuesday results. And, as already said, pics of the hot nurses doing things that the hospital doesn't pay them for!

Bryon, I just think it is your age talking. Same with me. When I would have accidents in my 20's and had to have surgery I just laughed it off. Now in my early 50's I feel mortal. Just don't leave us hanging here for a few days without hearing from you!

Minor procedure is one done on anyone else. If it is on me, it is major surgery. Same thing for anyone else. They use a lot of propafol(or however you spell that) good induction drug. Let us know how it went
