Shout out to Tom Petty!
I have always liked Tom Petty. I kind of classify him in the Neil Young frame: (a little country, southern rock, folk, acoustic, classic rock, etc). I'm not sure if the show at half time was taped (the vocals sounded recorded), but it wanted my to pull out the greatest hits and give it another listen. Mike Campbell was excellent!!

The highlight for me was seeing the Vox/Ampeg backline, although I think for "looks" I would have loved to see a few T60 enclosures with AC-100 heads in that backline!!!!

Tom Petty is awesome, long time fan!
Watched a 2 hr vid of him when he got his start out of Fl recently, home videos of the bus breaking down and all... One of his all time hits and my fav... <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/726Zf-zin-s&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/726Zf-zin-s&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object> |
I have been a Pretty fan for a long time, he seems to write songs about some of my girlfriends & myself. His songs hit very close to home for me:eek:
|
I heard that he was going to play Guitar Hero III for the half time show. Did this not happen...?

I caught a bit of an interview done by Terry Gross in 2006 re-run on NPR Friday. I didn't know someone burned down his house while he and his family was inside. Some of his best work followed, especially "Won't Back Down." Found a link:

Gotta be one of my favs:

God, he looked OLD last night. Still sounded okay but looked OLD. Like "Eagles reunion tour old".
The "phallic guitar reference" thing at the beginning was pretty funny. I'm surprised he got away with that, given how hyper-sensitive the whole superbowl/FCC thing is in wake of nipplegate. Actually, it would have been hysterical if Tom had flashed his nipple at the camera. |
Ha, Ha; that's exactly what I said to the room of people I was watching the last half of the game with......... "C'mon Tom, flash your nipple."
Woulda been a hoot. You thought he looked old, I got news for ya, he is. |
Of course it would have been nice to see him perform tunes that havent' been worn out on the airwaves for years. Some thing new and, uh...good.
I've never been a great fan...saw him in concert a few years ago and enjoyed the show, but wasn't "moved". Had hoped for something interesting for the SB. |
Yes he looked old. Hell he is old. Wait....so am I. Dammit!
I did think he sounded great and I too liked the Vox amps. Nice touch. |
Fantastic halftime show, fantastic sound work (which NEVER seems to happen at halftime shows). I was thrilled that they didn't do some crappy 'collection' song of all his hits. It was great to hear the crowd sing along even if the little college tools on the field didn't know the words.

FWIW the famous "Tom Petty's house" place where we party here in Gainesville has been torn town and replaced with townhouses/apartments...

Petty was great - we cranked the halftime show - my son was like - "Dad, how do you know the words for all these songs?"
|
I saw TP & the HB's at the LA forum in 1980. That was over 27 years ago. He is (they are) old. Now I am too. Thanks. ;)
|
I can't see where anyone would have thought he had prerecorded though (as suggested at the top of thread). He has never been a great voice, just a unique one. I like most of his early stuff, but it gets more selective on the later end. I saw him in concert in the 80's adn it was a GREAT show. I thought last night was great to have someone that is not necessarily on the A list of most people musically. I thought the played well too.
|
How come he didn't play "Peace in L.A."?
;) |
One of the first concerts where I could discern the vocals. Well done.
