It's simple how they do it --they oversell the heck out of their servers. No secret, and everyone does it.

If this means anything to you...

I don't want to go back to my days of having to rtfm to recompile apache, etc. I want someone else to do it and i'll just install my cms and use phpmyadmin and other gui tools to tweak.

That's why I spring for dedicated boxes.

Sorry Don, I'm only a speaka a tad geek?
By IMAP I meant that if I'm in New Brunswick visiting my daughter, I can log onto goDaddy and go into all my email accounts. I can receive and send emails from any location, anywhere in the world.
Sounds like you're talking about something different; I'm only familiar with POP3.
My error there buddy.

nostatic - you've been away from Linux for too long. Only thing I had to compile on my Debian server is mailm, a handy little command line mailer I use for a few things. Same wtih our RedHat servers at work - no compiling needed, just install the packages. Of course, if you *want* to compile you can...

HostMySite.com. I've been using these guys for 15 years and have 150+ hosting accounts with them. Nothing but happy with the hosting service and tech support.

Ok guys,

Need to bring an old thread back to life.

Westhost, who Todd and I were using for years now has been fine until a week ago. Its now been down THREE frigging times in a week, the last time as of 1900 last night and still up and down this morning. Thats enough for me...

Am now officially on the hunt for someplace new to host my site, email and bulletin board. Any new recommendations? Go Daddy is 15 miles away from me so am leaning towards trying them but open to other suggestions.

Thx,

Joe A

Just curious, is the current host Ipower?
WHile I've had very good luck with them in terms of downtime, I did have a problem withthem last year. Thier plans claim "unlimited" storage space and data transfer.
Well, it isn't. And they don't want media of any type being hosted.

Web Hosting Services, Reseller Hosting, and Dedicated Servers by HostGator is a top fiver for sure. ive been using them for a few years, NEVER a single issue and I host multiple accounts.

godaddy is the WORST from an IT point of view.

Had a few dedicated servers with different people over the years.

Most consistent is 1&1. I'd get a VPS from them. All the benis of a dedicated box with all the support of a managed solution.

Used Hostgator in the past. They are a reseller. Unless things have changed they don't actually have any data centers, they oem everything. Always felt like I was talking to a bunch of High School kids whenever I called.
