Power up and roll out in blue.
Dashed blue indicates flying, attempting to climb. Rate of climb was insufficient to clear trees, and pilot elected to abort. Red dashed line indicates throttle back, flaring to land. Unfortunately, that field has rising terrain, and we pancaked hard. So hard that the left strut is now protruding through the top of the wing. This initial impact caused the spinal compression. Airplane rolled to the tree line where it impacted a tree - causing secondary injuries.

You can see in that earlier picture where the tree impacted the spinner, the right front cylinder, and on back to the wing root. Intrusion into the cockpit at this point is what trapped and twisted my right ankle.

Again, the investigation is underway and I am not inclined to tell everything I know until it is complete. The blue and red lines on the image above are approximated, to the best of my memory.

I'll leave the questions out.....but there are many. again glad it wasn't worst. Takeoffs, the most critical portion of the flight.

After Saturday, I would say that how you put it down is pretty critical also. lol

I just returned from the hospital; checking on the pilot. They have him in a molded-fit clamshell torso immobilizer. It looks pretty unpleasant, but they say that he should be coming home tonight or tomorrow. He'll be wearing the device for 12 weeks.

Better than sleeping in dirt.

Just a rendering, but maybe the best one I've seen of the 2015.

Although I wish this on nobody, I understand the sentiment.
Speaking of neighbors, there has been no shortage of neighborly opinions as to the cause of the accident.
