The British officers and their team brought back to life what Hitler called his ‘Kraft durch Freude’ (KdF’) – or ‘Strength Through Joy’ – car in a town which carried the same name.
But they gave it back its original name – Volkswagen or ‘People’s Car ‘– and renamed the town Wolfsburg after the local castle.

After defusing an Allied bomb that had been dropped on the car plant in Wolfsburg, Colonel Charles Radclyffe and Major Ivan Hirst found the blueprints for Hitler's pre-war 'Peoples Car.'

From them, they restarted car production of the car designed for Hitler by Dr Ferdinand Porsche – who founded the Porsche car dynasty - with an order for 20,000 Type 1 Beetles for the British army and in doing so helped get Germany working again after the war.
Since then 21 million Volkswagen Beetles have produced and its success was one of the major building blocks of today’s mighty German motor industry.

I understand originally, right after the war, The British army only wanted the Volkswagen factory to keep producing the military version, the Kübelwagen for the British army.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1382158100.jpg

It was a custom with the British army people in charge with the program to have all newly made cars line up in the yard for inspection. After a few of those inspections the factory people decided to secretly build a couple of the original civilian KdF cars and include them in the line-up. The inspection officers liked that car so much that they put in the order for the initial post-war production of the Volkswagen.

I'm not satisfied with that website's version of history either.

The VW factory was to be disassembled and its machinery sent to any Allied country that wanted it as war reparation and part of the massive Morgenthau Plan to de-industrialize Germany and turn it into a “pastoral state”. That job-killing plan practically starved the populace, and was eventually rescinded.
