How do they jump without hitting the tail? Unless the pilot rolls the plane quickly. Seems like a big chance of strike.

He made these runs on a carb he designed himself and initially made in his own garage. S&S started producing it in both "fuel" and "gas" versions. Here is the early "3" for fuel. Notice the side mounted float bowl.

Warner Riley ran pretty much the same setup in 1972, topping 206 mph. 96" stroker on 92% nitro. Notice the rear sprocket - only 28 teeth (stock on a Sportster back then was 53 teeth). 25 tooth countershaft sprocket (stock was 19 teeth).

What is the clear tube connected to the 90* fitting going around to the other side of the carb used for?

The clear tube is a sight glass showing fuel level in the float bowl. Most S&S "L" carbs didn't have one, but some of the guys running fuel wanted to be able to adjust the float level without removing that side mounted bowl. The needle seat is actually a part of the fuel inlet fitting, and can be adjusted up and down by turning the smaller hex right under the nipple. It's kind of hard to see, but there is a really thin lock nut at the base of the fuel inlet / needle seat assembly. Here is one without the sight glass or externally adjustable needle seat:

Here is a better pic. Notice the absence of the really thin lock nut under the fuel inlet:

Took off to the Ring yesterday.
Had hoped for less traffic and unfortunately the track closed after first run due to biker who went off.
But still good fun.

And managed to get the Cayman to new top speed at the autobahn, 163 mph according to the sat nav.. Not bad for a 14 year old 2.7.

That's Pflanzgarten, it's a sharp drop with a good right hander.

So the idea is not to brake before the drop and still make the turn :D
it's a popular viewing spot

Cal was faster than any of 'em. Interestingly, the team that owned this bike struggled during Speed Week and never did even get it qualified for a speed run. H-D took an interest, had their own Dick O'Brien take charge, and they went back to the flats one week later, along with Gary Gabelich in The Blue Flame. Both set world records that next week. Also interestingly, they were running Warner Riley's motor in it by then, but on only about 60% nitro. 266 mph from a stroker Ironhead Sportster motor.
