i shot one in texas. badarse little rifle. i used to think the mini14 would be the best weapon for "when the meteor strikes", but the .308 rocks! anybody else have one, or shoot one? i think it would drain me of $1600, right?

if the zombies ever show up, i will be sorry if i dont get one. too bad my wife wont buy my excuses. i need to buy a ranch.

I am putting a little something aisde each month, so I can purchase "something" in .308. The something is probably an M1A. I doubt I will get a SOCOM, though.

Sorry but you are not allowed to own a weapon of any kind. Kalifornia is going to resind the 2nd admendment any day now and force gun owners to trade in any weapon for a slingshot.

.308 or 30.06 are both very nice calibers. Hard to go wrong with either of them.

Last weekend out at the SHOTSHOW I had a long discussion with the people from Knights Mfg they build the absolute best stuff. THe Navy Seals, US ARMY, US NAVY, Israelie Defense Forces and the Australian Army all uses their SR 25 weapon system for their sniping needs.

They have rampted up their production. However it is the final fit and finish that is the bottleneck.

Right now I have a Wincherster Mdl 70 Coyote with the medium SS Barrel in 308 and a big ole Leupold Variable Scope on it for a Tactical Rifle. Ultimately it would be a Nesika Action, Hand Lapped Obermyer Barrel and a HS Precision Stock with a Schmidt Bender, Leupold MK IV Variable Tactical scope or NIightforce scope.

OK, Tabs, for $1000-$1500, what would be the best buy in .308?

DPMS AP4 in 308. Short little carbine with collapsing stock. Sweet little gun. Much better ergos than any M1A. Seven pounds, not ten. My opinion.

For a grand? DSA FN-FAL. Dirt cheap mags, reliable as can be, and can be very accurate.

Best value for cheap would be a saiga in 308. Extra 10 round mags are about $50 though...

Oh, and ammoman.com has good 7.62x51 surplus for relatively cheap at the moment

<6 lbs. Checked them out at SHOT last weekend. Very pretty little rifle.

The point of a .308 is long distance "reach out and touch someone", so a carbine isn't going to do it. No, on the bolt action. I'll be getting a Springfield 1903 for that.

I have the Steyr Elite in .308, it's a bit pricey however it's hard to put a price on 1/2 inch MOA at 800yds plus. I also have an Armalite M-15 A4 NM that is a great shooter however not as dead accurate as the Steyr.

john, i almost bought a kimber classic. right down to writing the check. my friend was in the shop. he told me to come shoot his first. it was a 30.06 that he was taking to africa. the thing would not group all that well. maybe 1.5 inch five shot groups. i have a remington 700, and a winchester M70 that shoot WAAAAAAY better. both rifle come less expensive. dont buy a kimber. i did alot of research, and found that they just dont group all that well. it is good enough for hunting, but if you are the anal type it may drive you nuts.

i have enough hunting rifles. besides, i have taken to bow hunting, and would probably choose a rifle as second choice. i want a "schit hits the fan" tool, when zombies invade.

nobody needs a rifle like that....






All of the surplus .308 is hard enough to get, I don't need you to try to buy the same ammo as me!



I need to buy more garand ammo than I cn fire off in a life time, after kicking my self in the ass for not buying enough .308 to keep my M1A happy and warm.

Jim - 7.62x51 is easy to get. Heck, wideners has Privi often for just over $100/200rdns delivered, and ammoman.com just got both hungarian and lithuanian surplus in.

Of course, its nothign like the S. African surplus at $20/140....

I think .308 is ideal in a carbine. I like stopping power but don't want a 10 pound rifle. I know from personal experience that the DPMS AP4 has the accuracy to be useful out to 600 yds. But, thats an "offensive distance" isn't it.

I've shot high power with my M1A Nat'l Match. Its fun but not all that practical for me. I shoot three gun matches and use carbines in more realistic scenarios of defense. I find the .223 too small to give me confidence. The .308 is ideal for close, mid, and long range defensive use.
