Most zoo elephants are Asian, not African. Although the one in the pic above appears to be African.

Elephants are incredibly intelligent. I saw a couple of young elephants playing soccer on TV. One was the goaltender. The other shot the ball on goal with his foot about 40 feet away. The goaltending elephant kicked it aside with his foot. They did this several times.
The way they responded to their handlers, it looked like they understood them. There was communication. It reminded me of the dolphins, and how they can understand humans as well.
