His Page 2 stuff wasn't the best writing he ever did, but there were some glowing snippets of the old doctor in there...
Those were all collected as a book called "Hey Rube". Like I said, not his best writing, but probably essential for big fans (ie, me).

You're right in a way. Thompson definitely knew what he was doing when he pulled the trigger. For some insight on this, read the Johnny Depp introduction to the collection of photography called "Gonzo"...
... part of it was, I believe, his inescapable hero-worship of Ernest Hemingway.
