Here ya go.

Why are diesel fuel prices higher than gasoline prices?

Until several years ago, the average price of diesel fuel was usually lower than the average price of gasoline. In some winters when the demand for distillate heating oil was high, the price of diesel fuel rose above the gasoline price. Since September 2004, the price of diesel fuel has been generally higher than the price of regular gasoline all year round for several reasons. Worldwide demand for diesel fuel and other distillate fuel oils has been increasing steadily, with strong demand in China, Europe, and the U.S., putting more pressure on the tight global refining capacity. In the U.S., the transition to low-sulfur diesel fuel has affected diesel fuel production and distribution costs. Also, the Federal excise tax on diesel fuel is 6 cents higher per gallon (24.4 cents per gallon) than the tax on gasoline.

Related, I've noticed that biodiesel is always about $.50 more --the only reason I can see there is greed.

Do you have biodiesel filling stations up in your parts? I've never seen one down here...well, except for guys rolling drums of french fry oil out of Bob's Big Boy around 10 PM.

yeah, it's fairly popular here. --People really like to sport the bumper-sticker "Bio-Diesel - No War Required." (yeah, maybe --those same people are cheap too, and often fill with the dino-diesel.) More Prius's here too --many with "Carbon Neutral - I bought cred..." stickers. It's like a freaking competition of who is more rightously green.

I believe that Grays Harbor WA (~120miles from Seattle) has the largest biodiesel factory (refinery?)

A hippie-gas turf war, huh? I always knew the trends worth setting were set up there.

Hey, we're not all hippies!

But yes, I've heard of fistfights over the used oil behind some restaurants. Most people make arrangements with the restaurant owners, but some guys just pull up unannounced and pump out what they need. Gets hairy if they're pumping oil from barrels that some other guy has set up.

Some folks have been hassled over transporting the used oil. In some states, the strict letter of the law says you need a permit to transport "hazardous waste". Some think they should be able to lug vegetable oil around without rules and regulations from The Man.

Then a guy posts this picture of his oil collection trailer, and you realize that some people NEED regulation. Imagine this thing with 55 gallons of vegetable oil, taking an offramp at 60mph

Spooky!

Probably not as hair as their girlfriend's armpits.

 So all those folks selling their cars to Europeans are facing prosecution/civil penalties? When did this start?

I guess they do face some sort of prosecution and/or fine. If at all, the dealership does face a fine if it sells a diesel (or possibly any car) out of country. When did it start? I don't know. None of this really applied to us because we had nor have plans to sell the car in general.
