Mulholland sucks!
 

From Laurel Canyon Blvd. to Benedict Cyn. Blvd. what an awful and embarrassing road this has become. It's full of potholes, divots and crumbling asphalt. I drove my 911 along there today, and thought the poor car would split in two!

And to think this is one of the most storied thoroughfares in L.A. history.

Leave it to this city to allow another of its treasured landmarks to fall into decay.

Then again, what can be expected from that same city which allows the Hollywood Sign to go up for sale? :rolleyes:

It'll get worse as illegals continue to take the city over and reward themselves with bounty from the public trough at the expense of things (and people) that deserve it.

L.A. sucks in general. I avoid going to that hell-hole of a city at all costs if I can avoid it. Hell, I don't even like flying out of LAX anymore.

I cant say I'm to happy to hear that, I have been east coast dreaming about tearing down that road for years. Also hearing about the illegals is pretty freaking annoying ... what the he11 is going on in North America !!!!

i live a stone's throw from the eastern most tip of mullholland, where it meets the cahuengua pass.

maybe it was great once. today it's a nightmare of bad pavement, lawn water runoff, and contractor trucks. i used to take it to commute the in the mornings. took about the same time as the 101-405, and was scenic. and there are still one or two corners where you can almost scrape a peg if nobodys around.

but in the past couple years there have been actual traffic jams on mulholland. just sad.

the hollywood sign is a "corporate sponsorship" thing. it's supposed to save the city money in maintenance.

I still have some fun up there, but you're right about its condition. In all fairness, it's been one heck of a rainy winter in L.A. and there is a lot of fixxin' to be done everywhere. My 996 is so sticky that I can avoid potholes 10 feet ahead of me @ ~50mph. Just go around them. Car handles so well w/ the H&R suspension that Mulholland isn't even really fun unless you drive like a lunatic. And I won't do that.

Some of the damage I've noticed on the road has been present for at least as long as I've had my 911. So yes, I can imagine the recent rains have caused some damage. But eight-year-old damage is unacceptable.

David, I would like to see Mulholland repaved (as well as other roads), but I think it would be a nightmare. Look at Coldwater and Laural going into the city. They both need work, but I don't see how they can be repaved without major headaches and traffic.

Anyway, the recent rains have torn up Mulholland even more. :(

Clearly you need to improve your suspension ..and by "improve" i mean stiffen it up, go to lower profile tires on 17's.



All in all you guys have it good. Tho, I expect that they may be following Seattle's road model --rather than putting in speed bumps they just let pot-holes develop. This allows them to spend money on more important things like 'studies' And slows down traffic. (Seattle is king in knowing how to slow down traffic, btw)

I would say it's totally possible to repave Mulholland in segments. Just a few months ago they repaved the Valley side of Coldwater Canyon, and that was a total mess.

It is too bad though. The road's condition has gotten worse in the past year. Everytime I go up for a run, there's a new hole or stretch of bumps from under road water seepage.

All this aside, there are still some great stretches, but you have to go up in the middle of the night to be able to use "more" of the road and AVOID TRAFFIC. At 1:00am on a weekday... hardly a car anywhere.

Any heavily travelled road gets this, especially when a corrupt/dishonest contractor resurfaces it.

Recently a local road, Watt Ave, was repaved. Has needed it for years. Less than 6 months after being repaired, new potholes are forming and the surface is peeling up in others. I am told(by a retired Cal Trans inspector) that it is because the contractor layed his asphalt too thin to save a little money. It never looked good, even immediately after they "finished" That is the sort of thing that makes me nervous to cross a bridge

In the late 80's it was almost as bad as it is now. Then they repaved Mul.
Drive it more and you will learn the road obsticles and hazards. If you have time walk it. You will get a whole new perspective. No am not kidding.

Agree with Jeff. I know every inch from Cahuengua to the 405, and you need to as well if you are going to drive it briskly. It is basically a *black diamond trail* in ski lingo. The obstacles put some sport in it.

Don't you worry about that. We have started that already. Freaking roundabouts and what used to be 2 lanes is not one lane with the island in the middle and speed limit change to 25. Not to mention the million stop signs. Fuchin' bull *****. are we are trying to get rid of traffic and not create more.

LOL! Dave at TRE was who talked me out of all that suspension baloney. He said I'd need painkillers in no time if I tried driving a 22/30mm, polybronze 911 with 17-inchers on Mulholland.

Well, I don't drive Mulholland regularly. But I remember the most glaring portions, like just before the fire station (going west) between Benedict and Beverly Glen.

Even so, hitting good speed on Mulholland has become almost liability. Between slower traffic, the horrific state of the road, and residents who enjoy pulling out of driveways without stopping, it hardly makes the effort worth it, IMO. :(

mulholland is over. it's just plain residential. and no longer safe to get any kind of speed going. i don't want to be killed by jack nicholson's illegal alien colon hydro therapist as she backs out of the driveway.

same thing is happening near malibu. there's a new goddamn condo every time i ride up to rockstore. thankfully there are a dozen excellent roads in the canyons north of town.

I'd hate to think the only place I can drive even reasonably fast is an hour away in Rosamond (Willow Springs). But it's come down to that...

Of course, by day's end, I've spent $145 for track fees, and $50 for race gas...good gawd...:rolleyes:
