I have an 07 GTI 4 door and a 97 C2S with 28,000 miles. If I had to pick one, Id take the GTI. I have owned it for one year. I wonder why I even own the 993. It just sits in the Garage. I never drive it. The GTI, on the other hand. has all the room for a work car, Small enough for the city. Doesnt attract a lot of attention, Quiet with no rattles and the electric power steering makes the 993 feel clunky. Plus it really hauls ass. I have the DSG and since I live in the city I love it plus the reason the car is so fast is no power lost betwen shifts. Cant say enough positive about the GTI.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1203402057.jpg

I do agree that in town, with a more aggressive pattern, it's more like 21 mpg, still pretty good... I'm really impressed with this car. I drove my SC this morning and while I still love that car (have had it for >11y), it feels slow now ;-( Time for a diet and maybe some mods on that car too... |

993: +/- 280 hp and 250 lb/ft of torque for 3065 lbs GTI (w. Revo) 250 hp but 265 lb/ft for 3100 lbs Not that huge a gap (caveats start here) if you're already rolling, if you need 4 doors and a trunk, if you don't mind FWD and want modern gizmos and good MPG ;-) Totally different cars for different uses, and let's not even talk about looks, but I'd argue that my slightly modified GTi @$25K will hang with a 993 on a freeway, easily. Hell, It made me forget my 996 in one day, and that's even faster ! It's fast enough, great commuter, really ! But there is no doubt as to which car is prettier to look at in your garage, or more fun on a track ;-) |
I have been out of the VW thing for ~7 years, but used to have a modified Corrado VR6 that gave my uncle's 968 the what-for, much to his chagrin and my cha-glee.
The VR6 at full chat is one of the great automotive sounds. Oh the hard $ lessons learned, being a college student driving a hot rod rare Volkswagen that had been ridden hard and put away wet since new... I've driven both R32s and they are amazing cars. The new one with the DSG gearbox is probably my fantasy daily driver. The MKV GTI is also really, really nice and lack of AWD aside, not dissimilar to the R32 experience. I maintain that the 90-92 2.0 16v GTi is the best one. |
I have a 2004 R32 with a 240-hp VR6 that would give my 1988 Carrera a run for its $ in a straight line. It might even be quicker. And it probably handles about as well & brakes even better. Plus I can fold down the back seat & stick a lawn-mower in the hatch.
I have posted before about my enthusiasm for my R32 (with 55,000 trouble-free miles). It would be hard to beat for a daily driver. And with AWD & snow-tires it is incredibly capable & fun in the snow. While I am very enthusiastic about my R32, I am still even more enthusiastic about my 911. I love that it is so "involving" to drive fast & that it does not have ABS, traction & stability control, etc. Bottom line, I love having both cars for different reasons. And as deathpunk dan said, "The VR6 at full chat is one of the great automotive sounds." You should hear a 3.2-liter VR6 at WOT with the exhaust flapper-valve open! A truly glorious sound! |
