Kids in many parts of the country are like this, and to think that most of them graduated from high school this stupid!

I laugh then cry when watching Jay do this... every frigging time.

Sadly, not untypical products of government schools.

Never underestimate the stupidity of a teenager (or adult).

Saw some teenagers walking along the road a few days ago, one walked across the street right in front of me, surprised me enough that I almost hit her. Turned around to tell her she was going to get killed, and the whole group starts yapping how you have to die from something, can't live forever, blah, freakin' blah. I tell them it is fine if they don't care if they die, it is their life after all. Problem is, that the person who runs them over and kills them will feel like it is their fault, and feel guilty about it, likely ruining their lives. Waste of breath on my part.

Tobra - I think Stomachmonkey is referring to the Jay Leno bit where he hits the streets and asks various folks some pretty easy questions to wit they make a fool of themselves with some stupid answer. But I will also agree with you - there are many outthere that should be DOA by crossing in front of me - thank Gawd for antilock breaks and nervous reflexes!

That's my favourite segment, along with 'Headlines'. Really, just ask anyone under 40 some of the questions Jay asks..you'll be astonished at how fuked this country is going to be when the 50yo+ people now living are gone.

We can thank Lyndon Johnson and his 'Great society' program for the lowering of academic achevievment standards.

I remember watching an episode when the Jaywalkers couldn't name our nation's capital. They asked young and old alike and no one knew! Sad, very sad. I bet more immigrants than home grown Americans know the answer. And I don't think it's just because they had to know to pass the citizenship test.

Not trying to hijack this thread but when I mentioned to someone at work I was going to New Mexico to pay my sister a visit they asked if I needed a passport to go there .

Sadly....they also have kids .

Now that I think about it in a few years I might need one to go there .

PS Jaywalkers is a great segment ! Too funny ..........

Thats O.K. I had no idea what he was talking about either.

I almost his a cute blond a few weeks ago she thought it was a good idea to step out from between 2 cars along a busy road to cross the street. She stepped right out in front of my in the FJ Cruiser, I am now positive it s Anti-lock brakes work.

What pissed me off is they thought the whole thing was funny. She almost died and her and her girlfriend were laughing like it was a joke.

I get emotionally torn between hilarity and depression every time I watch one of those segments - especially when a subject is a school teacher, or studying to be one. A sad commentary on our society. And these people may vote!

We were talking about politics in my marketing class yesterday, the teacher didn't know that Obama was a senator, she though he was a governor, which I thought was pretty funny.

What was really funny was when the girl sitting next to me turned to me and asked if George Bush was a republican or democrat.

I had someone ask me a few years ago how many states there are. He preceded the question with, "you're up on current events, aren't you?" I was a bit perplexed and wondered if I had somehow missed something major. I answered, 50. His response was "whew". Apparently he had asked about 15-20 other people and not a single one had said 50, so he had begun to wonder if he had missed something.

Very sad.

I'm a pretty sharp guy, decently educated, and work in a technical job, but I don't pay that much attention to politics. These days it's not far off from watching WWE. I've seen the JayWalking bit before. Some of the stuff that they ask is really basic, but occasionally they ask questions about specific lower positions in the govt that I can't answer. I don't feel too bad about that.

I agree and disagree that the problem is education. Actually, I think the problem is more related to individual and societal values. Many people don't stress education to their kids, and don't take an active part in their kids education. On top of that, society doesn't really seem to stress it that much except in certain areas.

I don't think we can expect schools to do all of the work. Parents need to be the main drive, and school should be the tool to get kids to the end result.

While that part of jay's show is funny, I don't think it can be used to judge someones knowledge. I think some people are giving wrong answers on purpose. If you are talking to Jay and you know its going to be on tv, wouldn't you say something funny rather than give a correct answer?? I think some people are just being funny. Also, I think they only show people that give wrong answers since that is funnier too. I may be wrong though.
