Video Cams and SloMo playback.
I do some sports technique analysis on video. I prefer quicktime because it has the sliding bar, you can move it back and forth to study movements. Windows Media player is the worst, as you can only stop it and restart.
Lately, people have emailed me some Video clips from their Video Camera that I can't open in Quicktime player. Today I even got an MPG from a Sony Camera that quicktime wouldn't open, but Windows Media does. I am assuming it's a proprietary thing, agreements between Sony and Microsoft that keep them exclusive in playback. What I'm looking for is Camera brands which aren't tied together with Microsoft and record into AVI's or Quicktime playable formats. Or do I need to find a converter that will take the files and convert them to something that would. Thanks for the input here.....

First, to shoot nice slo-mo stuff it helps to shoot in higher frames-per-second; there are some cams that can do this.
Regarding a more universal format, most any camera should be able to do what you want, the critical part is what software the video is processed in and what format it is finally saved in. Also, most decent video processing software should be able to open all of the popular formats. FWIW. Best, Kurt |

You need co/decs. Compression/Decompression algorithms.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codec Basically every format has it's own plus you can have an avi that uses different schemes further complicating things. I am a codec whore, I grab everything I can find. Start with ffmpeg, it's an open source converter project that will install/get you access to the most common stuff. Good Luck.

I can't play my Sony video on my Mac with Quicktime. I just added it as yet another thing I hate about my Mac...

In this case, your unhappiness might be better directed towards Sony; Macs are notoriously more open than Sony products! Best, Kurt |
