PC Guys

One thing I hate about Intel chips is the multiple designations/names/models.

Posted last week re our IT guy had some laptops for sale.

He unloaded the HP for $400.

He has 2 Dells left, a Dell D600 that I am familiar with as it was the carry box issued to me by a past employer.

The other box is a D800, bigger screen than the 600.

He is willing to let me have one or both for $250 a piece.

The D800 has a Pentium M 1700 with 1 GB ram and a new HD.

What's the performance on that chip?

In laws are coming for a visit next month and F-in law is a windows guy and a net junkie.

Far too irritating to have him hogging my wifes laptop when he visits.

Thinking it's a good deal to have laying around for him when he visits.

Thoughts.

I can understand that with the consistency that Macs have had on their processors. You don't happen to have a list of the myriad of processors Macs have used by chance, before they decided to start building pc's that is?

I have a D400 with that chip (Pentium M, 1.7) in it. While it is now my backup unit, it is more decent with XP. If we had not taken on a project that required Vista, I may not have changed when I did. You might see what it would cost to bump it to 2 Gb of ram, even with XP. It does make a nice difference. Ebay should have it somewhere pretty cheap.

My only caution on the Dx00 series is that they are getting old. The screens in particular may be getting a little on the dull /dim side. Otherwise, your FIL should be in tall cotton.

Any M series chip is not stellar, that 1700 is pretty much on par with a P4 1.8 non-HT. The 800 is nice with the larger screen, and it doesn't suffer from the front corner stress fracture issue that the 600 has. However the 800 has shorter battery life.

68xxx replaced by PowerPC.

Man that's a big list. Can understand why it gave you trouble.

As opposed to 80xxx it is 3 times as long. For years I heard about the superiority of the Motorola chip, and then the Power PC chip. But they must have been lying. Either that or Apple has decided to hammer their customers with that PC chip 'eh?

Yeah whatever.

We both know what I'm talking about.

I asked for advice.

Not to be jerked around by you.

Go waste someone else's time.

I'd consider buying it. If the laptop fails, the RAM and HD could be worth around $150.-

Sorry I misunderstood. Get rid of your toy computer & get a PC. There's some advice!

FWIW, PowerPC is a pretty darn good architecture. Superior to Intel offerings, that's for sure. It's based on the Power series from IBM, which is currently (and usually is) the fastest CPU available.

Intel architecture, for the most part, isn't very good.

Yeah, Moto could have kept Apple if they had simply delivered the G5 laptop chip that Apple wanted. The last rev G5 towers were performing better than the 1st rev Intel Macs.

Moto put all their resources into the xBox 360 PPC chip. The original 360 dev kits that developers received were Mac G5's.

Kinda ironic that the largest single order placed with Apple came from Microsoft.

Just remember that the HD is probably spinning at 5400 RPM's. How big is the drive? It may just work though...
