Wow. That was a terrible day. My brother and I called each other when we heard the news we were so shaken.
Hard to describe how invincible he seemed if you hadn't seen him drive in the rain - it actually made you laugh out loud to see the rest of the field being passed by a magician as though they were driver's ed students instead of F1 pilots. Ever since I've always had a little voice in my head when I've been driving too fast - "If it can happen to Senna....." and slowed down. |

When that crash happened, I just stood and stared at the TV for the longest time. Seemed like it took forever for aid workers to reach him......I've visited a very nice statue and tribuite they have of Aryton at Spa.

I had to work that day, so I recorded the race to watch later that night.
ESPN would air the race at like 7 am. I sat down to watch it about 11 pm. I knew it was bad when I saw the wreck. I turned it off, and went to ESPN. There I found out he was gone. I never finished watching the race.

+1. The day the music died. No one has driven with his passion since. He and Gilles were the last of a breed.

Good read, quite tragic. Feels like that was just a cursed weekend for F1. I wasn't into racing back then, but his impact on the sport is just as potent. I would of liked to of seen him race.

If I make it to Heaven, the first thing I'm going to do after saying Hi to my Grand Parents is ask Senna if he can take me for a drive.
He is still my first choice for riding shotgun on a hot lap. Steve

Thanks for posting that. A very in-depth and moving piece.
I remember that day. I was working at a gas station that morning and had taped the race to watch when I got home. The first guy into the station asks: "Are you a Formula 1 fan?" "The biggest," I said. He went on to tell that me that Senna had been killed in the race. I told him, no, that was a young driver name Ratzenburger, in qualifying yesterday. No matter what he said I didn't believe him, I though he must have it wrong. About an hour later a friend who never visited me at work drove into the station, and just seeing him arrive I knew that it was actually true. You had to admire the absolute commitment he had, and the sheer ability. He was a head and shoulders above. A very sad weekend that didn't get much better at the next event. |

To think...the last 100 hours of any of us may have already started...who is going to bother to document them? RIP, Warren...

Great read, thanks. However, I'm sure the loss of Roland's life was no less of a loss for his family and friends. Pity the author referred to him as F1's least talented driver. I also wonder about many other facets of the story. It seems that no one other than Senna himself would know many of these details.

Senna was the best. Many did not like his samurai/warrior methods, but when he was on, he was magnificent. I think all F1 fans remember his drive at Domington in 93. Bloody brilliant by anyones standards; in a totally worthless car...
I would like to visit his grave in Brazil. Luck for me I was able to attend a race at Imola in 2000 and visited the tribute at Tamburello... When he died, I think all his fans, like me, lost a little something. It was compared to the death of Jimmy Clark and Alberto Ascari; pretty good company...

It represented the death of an era for me, too. In fact, I really haven't followed F1 since. I'm very much out of touch with the sport, beyond the snippets I glean from this site.
This is not easy for me to admit, but at the time, I was not a fan of Senna. Oh sure, I knew he was the best. Watching him in the rain was nothing short of magical. How often does one find themselves jumping up and down and yelling at the TV or biting the corner of a sofa pillow, these days? However, I was always pulling for Prost, Mansel, Berger, et al. No idea why? Who knows why a kid/teen, picks the things that he does. Perhaps Senna was too young and cocky for my father, and that's what influenced me? Whatever the case, it has been an interesting journey for me to discover him posthumously. I was wrong about him on so many levels. Really, to perform at his degree, how else is one supposed to be? You must posses the cunning instincts of a warrior! Sadly, it was just his time...

Knowing what I know now, if I had it to do over, I would pick different players...

Still have a Signed Domington '93 program... (senna, hill, prost, and schumacher-i think)...
Love looking at Senna's signature every now and then to remind me of him... I sometimes think about selling it just to use it for a ticket to Sal Paulo for a race and a visit to the grave site..... For all you Audi lovers, remember he had Audi dealerships in Brazil... not hondas... ;-)
