Lennon's Imagine on American Idol

OK, I admit I watch the show. I just like to see raw talent is all. That 16 y/o kid who sang Imagine blew everybody away. Anyone else see the show? He brought Paula Abdul to tears.

Why does everyone think that the only singing style is southern gospel or Apollo soul now?

Can't anyone hit a pure note without all these stupid trilly flippy embellishments?

Great voice, butchered the song. What is with these people? The elaboration just ruins it. The national anthem gets wrecked routinely.

Just about anybody can sing that song as it was written and do a decent job. This kid sang it his way, changed it up quite a bit and displayed his vocal talent. I thought it was great.

Without acting like a hypocrite, here posting on PPOT, don't you have better things to do with your life than watch American Idol? Yeah, I know I waste my time here.

Paula Abdul is a complete waste. Absolutely nothing redeeming or meaningful to contribute.

I never watch but Carly does it for me.

So vocal talent just means flipping a few notes? No wonder this "style" is so popular right now. Pretty shallow as an positive assessment for talent. Since everyone does the same thing now (just like ink or pink hair, or goth) why not just get Kelly Clarkson, or Abdul's failed romance guy to do it? Talent - puhlease

1. Paula Abdul is a nut job and cries at everything. (and boinks good looking contestants)

2. Kid has some pipes

3. Lennon was already dead 2 years by the time this kid was born.

4. He should have sung it like the original that would have took everyone apart.

5. Did not watch the show, wife does but missed it last night, did watch the you tube link.

6. We already have a Clay Aiken this kid is just another one.

7. Paula is a nutjob.

Whitney made my skin crawl with all the warbling on the National Anthem.

You guys are a sorry lot! That kid is ******* incredible. He made a mature decision by selecting that song. It would have come off as a cheap rip-off had he simply repeated Lennons phrasing. Instead, he didn't make an effort to do it "better" than John....he did it "different" than John. And did it very well.

I haven't watched idol, but after seeing that video, I'm going to start. Are all the contestants that good?

I would say this year has more talent that all previous and yes, I watch it as well. That kid will win the whole thing if he continues to perform like that.

there are some great singers this year.

The chick that did 'you're so vain' was absolutely stunning, IMO. Also enjoyed the 'Me & Mrs. Jones' girl. It wasn't 'blow you away' good but she had my attention. I thought the judges were way out of whack on their opinion of her. Pretty girl dressed nicely singing an achingly beautiful song....that is a nice package IMO.

The black guy has some power too.

The little kid that did Imagine is one amazing singer as well. Not terribly unique, but good. Nice story behind his singing as well.

Heck even the guitar kid with the dreads is pretty darn good at what he does. And my first instinct with people like that is to grab a blunt instrument and put them out of their misery.

I only like the losers at the start of the shows, but I saw that kid sing, and in my opinion they should have just stopped the show and gave him the win right there. That was the best performance on AI EVER!

I liked him too. Sure, there are plenty of better things to do, but what else can your entire family sit and watch and then talk about? CSI Miami? 2 and 1/2 men? I started watching it when my daughter turned 13 and rather then go into another room, watched it with her. You have to give them credit. I would like to hear how many artist today on the air could stand up an sing like these people can. Harmless fun.

In a former life I was a musician. Today, I listen to music somewhat rarely and there are a couple of reasons for that. One is that music is not background for me. I LISTEN to it. And if it is really good, it moves me in powerful ways. So again, it is not background for me and I'm usually busy so I can't have the distraction. But another reason I don't listen to it much these days is because not that many singers impress me. Actually, I listen almost exclusively to the rhythm section in music anyway, but the singing is unavoidable. If a singer can control and change the DYNAMICS of a note, then great. But sadly, what most of them are doing is changing the PITCH. It hurts my ears. Again, if a singer can hit a note on the button, and hold that, then I'm impressed. If they can hit it on the button and control the dymanics while staying right in the center of the note, then I am even more impressed. When they start waivering the PITCH of the note, I turn the music off. To me, that is a cheap trick.

C'mon Hugh, I'm sure you'd be "singing a different tune" if it was on ABC..
