It's a Federal issue in Federal court, so yeah, I think it is. You can't exactly go bankrupt and people not find out about it if they want to.

I suppose you're thinking of throwing in the towel? Bummer. Sorry to hear it.

No no no, not yet anyway.

A company here in town is rumored to have filed and I was asked if I could find out.

I just re-read my title and see now how you thought that. I meant can someone do me the favor of looking up another company on the service. Not that I wanted to know if someone else could look for me on it

If you know the district the company is headquartered in, you should be able to contact the Federal bankruptcy court in that district to determine if they have filed.

It would be a matter of public record, but you may have to go to the court to get the information. The online services could take some time before it is in their records.

You might want to just contact the company directly -- if you are a creditor, they probably will have an obligation to tell you if they have filed.

It's all on line. you need to know what stae and federal district he filed on and you look there. Just look up "federal bankruptcy court" and you should find the search function. I thinkk they charge you 8 cents a page for each document you request.

L-Diddy...you didn't give enough info for me to search, but here's a link to Mi website of US Bankruptcy coourts...I think you can access the docket online. It varies by jurisdiction.:

Thanks, that led me to the service I was thinking of too, "PACER". I thought all lawyers had subscriptions and could just search PACER, no?

I think anyone can sign up for PACER. You don't have to be a lawyer, and I don't think it costs anything. You just have to set up an account with a credit card so they have something to bill their 8 cents per page to.

What's the name of the company?

Also, you'd need to know where they are incorporated. If they are smart (or lucky), they are incorporated in Delaware, and filed there. Debtors get away with murder in Delaware.

They could be headquartered in MI, but still be a corporation registered under Delaware law, and therefore able to file in Delaware. Just a possibility if a search doesn't show any filing in MI.

Len, you're thinking of Lexis-Nexus. Pacer is owned by he Gov't (Judiciary Branch). It pulls in a LOT of money each year from fees.
