If you get a chance, grab a ferry and visit the San Juan Islands. Even a day in Friday Harbor. Beautiful area but you will be cold this time of year.

I looked up their rain totals for February and was very surprised. Anacortes gets an average of 2.49 inches of rain in February. Here in Half Moon Bay, just south of San Francisco, we get 4.91 inches. We get twice as much rain? What's up?

Anacortes isn't that far from Sequim, the driest place in Western WA and ORE...In the shadow of the Olympic Mts. The rain drops before going over the mtns (rain forest), or get directed north or south. Cold, what's you definition of cold? Probably get in the 50's, maybe 60's if ur lucky....
Nice area, do the ferry ride thur the San Juan Islands. Just a few miles out of town, you can drive to the top of Mt. Erie, can see forever up there. From town head east on Hwy 20 and then head to Belingham on Chuckanut Drive...Enjoy..

Anacortes is fantastic. Like Bob says, it's far enough west of the Cascades that it doesn't get totally drenched for the whole "rainy season." The Olympic mountains are fantastic hiking. Oh, and if you head a little ways west past Port Angeles, there's a road out to the coast named SR-112 that is an absolute dream for a Porsche-guy. Winding, deserted, and views of the water that are to die for.
I miss the NW. Dan

It does not really rain that much here in the Pacific NW, just lots of overcast days with drizzles here and there in the Fall and Winter. I grew up in a place where it hurts to walk in the rain.
PNW is beautiful in the Spring and Summer. Yeah, definately take the ferry to see the San Juan Islands.

Any chance you'll be in Seattle?

I forgot to warn you: the Seattle area Pelicans are a warm and hospitable bunch. If you're not careful, one or more of them may buy you a beer, just because. I could name names, but there are so many of them, and the reputation is uniformly well-deserved.

Mrs. Z-man and I visited Anacortes a few years ago during the summer. A very, very lovely island! Definately hop on a ferry and visit the San Juan islands.
This is on one of the islands: Lime Kiln Point: ![]() Enjoy your time there! -Z-man.

Yep, need to do a visit to the refinery for "problem solving and exchange of ideas".
Flying into and out of Seatac but unfortunately not much time to fool around or sightsee. I hate it when I go on a trip for work and they actually expect me to WORK! arriving Seattle Monday around 2 pm, driving to Anacortes immediately, getting back to Seattle Thursday morning for a fight out, back to regular work Friday morning. I need to have a talk with my social director ![]() Last edited by sammyg2; 02-28-2008 at 07:09 AM.. |

We go to Anacortes every so often, last July for one. Was raining when I landed in Seattle, rained all the way to the islands, was ok one day there and was raining when we left. I still like it though. We went once for a Jazz Festival, really cool. Great places to eat and drink down town there. OK Mexican spot. I have friends that live there and on Widbey Island. It's great for awhile but I am not living there.

Sammy. It sounds like you're renting a car so you'll have no trouble exiting the secure area but I might be useful to you when you fly back out. I can make the security line go away.
And while you're here, I'd be interested in joining any sessions where the local guys introduce you to some of the beverage flavors we feature here. I would like to point out that not less than at least three people have suggested you take a ferry ride to the San Juans. There is a reason they have suggested this. If you do what they say, you will be glad you did. And.....try the Ivars Clam Chowder, which I believe is served on the ferry. Best I've ever had, by a longshot. And finally....to answer your question, yes. You should plan for chilly weather. The locals all know your best bet is layers. A regular shirt of some kind, a fluffy pullover thingie and a shell. The shell is very important, whether or not it rains. The air here is cool and VERY humid. My Dad, who was raised in West Yellowstone Montana (60 degrees below zero is quite common there), said he was never so cold as in Seattle at 30 degrees above zero. He was right. You could be in a stiff breeze at 40 degrees F and 100% humidity.
