internet speed

Any recommendations on which program for testing connection speed?

kstar 03-05-2008 06:37 PM

speedtest.net !

cl8ton 03-05-2008 06:47 PM

Kalick->speed_test

kstar 03-05-2008 06:56 PM

That 2Wire speed test clocked me at 3Mbps, Speedtest.net at 5.5Mbps.

Lots of variables, of course.

FWIW.

Best,

Kurt

2wire has always been pretty accurate in the past.
Actually, I like this one the best plus you can also geo-locate an IP to boot!:D -->Click

Hugh R 03-05-2008 07:28 PM

Your current bandwidth reading is
5.70 Mbps

Is that good?

Hee, I know it pinpoints me to within 100 yards, actually to my DSL NOC!

That's really good!

What service are you using? Cable?

2wire test 5.04 Mbps on standard Cable

16.62 mbps with 2wire. Cox cable internet.

cl8ton 03-05-2008 07:49 PM

Keep in mind cable is a shared resource and bandwidth is not guaranteed as you share a fixed amount of bandwidth with neighbors.
Got allot of porn surfing neighbors that get off work at 5 and your bandwidth is toast, during the day and late evenings, it is stellar.

DSL is a guaranteed bandwidth!

That's a good point for many cable networks, Rodney. But, some newer and updated cable networks have improved topography and have filled a lot of the first mile and beyond legs with fiber.

Of course the earliest, daisy-chained cable networks were/are the worst!

I have SBC's highest speed DSL and am very happy with it. My parents are on a newer cable network in Dallas and their speeds make my 5-6Mbps seem limp. :(

Best,

Kurt

I don't think so....
I just installed the new wireless "enhanced" high speed do-hicky.
When their help line finally answers.... I will let you know what it should be.
I am guessing they will say that whatever the sales guy told me it should be, it will actually be "up to" whatever they claimed.

kstar 03-05-2008 09:06 PM

I think Hugh is saying that "his" speed is 5.7Mbps - looks like he just copied and pasted his results.

FWIW, that is "fast" for most of the US!

I remember when a T1 was considered very fast at about 1.5Mbps.

Best,

Kurt

speedracing944 03-06-2008 03:47 AM

What is standard for broadband wireless?

I am far enough from the tower that Sprint was unsure I would even get signal.

My speeds range from 130 kbps to 800 kbps but seem to be more on the lower end.

Speedy:)

masraum 03-06-2008 08:43 AM

Best bet when testing online is to try a couple of different sites, and throw out any numbers that are different than the majority.

I think my house tests in the 5-5.8mb range. Funny thing is that if I use the ATT speed tester that the ATT tech support uses I'll get a different number almost every time and it varies from 2-4mb.

SlowToady 03-06-2008 08:49 AM

4.08 here at school, cable. I just pulled a steady 630KB/sec off of MIT, so I'm not complaining.

kstarnes, I'd take a T1 any day over residential cable. As long as I wasn't footing the bill....Guaranteed bandwidth, guaranteed uptime, bunch of IPs...Better support, etc.

There is an Insight commercial here in KY where they have a "customer" say that his Insight cable is as fast as his T3 (DS-3) at work. That's funny...Insight cable is at MOST 10Mb/sec, and not guaranteed in any way shape or form. A full DS-3 is 45Mb/sec, guaranteed. IOW, the DS-3 is 4.5x as fast. What bull**** advertising.

kstar 03-06-2008 08:59 AM

Toady, agreed re the T1.

But I'm also not complaining about my 5-6Mbps DSL circuit with probably 99% uptime for mostly one-way data traffic - I'm not running any servers from home.

I remember when I cobbled together a ISDN line 12 years ago using a Moto BitSurfer modem; I think the bandwidth was 128Kbps when the channels synched . . . and that was really fast for a home connection!

Best,

Kurt

masraum 03-06-2008 09:57 AM

Yeah, a T1 is great, but with today's dsl... I'm at 6mb down and 768k up. I suspect my uptime is also in the 99-97% range. I think I notice it down once or twice a year at most. I have a dynamic IP, but I think I usually keep the same IP for anywhere from 6-24 months. I know at one point in the past, I had the same IP for more than 18months.

t951 03-06-2008 10:17 AM

I have my router connect to DDNS and register a name once a month, It doesn't matter if my ip changes because I connect via name. and it's free!

cl8ton 03-06-2008 10:27 AM

Wow, haven't heard the term ISDN since I cobbled the A/B channels years ago to get my whopping 128k!

DSL biz account here w/5 static IP's and 1m down/.7m up is $39 month.
And have the option to turn the knob up for more bandwidth!

I run some hobby websites on home servers

Also agree on the T1!

SlowToady 03-06-2008 10:39 AM

ISDN..the good old days. When my friend's dad moved out to our area, he couldn't get anything decent, connection wise. This was when DSL was first emerging as the New Hot Thing, and cable wasn't available in the area. So he got ISDN instead, and had a block of 256 IPs. Yep, for the house. We ran tons and tons of machines, all world reachable, and had great fun. It was a business class ISDN account, since he worked from home, and I recall the bill being staggeringly high. Eventually it was cheaper to just pay for AT&T to install the required lines for DSL, and he did.

Man, ISDN. I thought I was the bomb with my Red Hat 5.2 box, a 133mhz P1 Dell with 128MB of RAM. downloading stuff at 14KB/sec. Got my first introduction to Solaris there also.

Oh the good ol' days...

Back in the ISDN days your only other real option was modem in my neck of the woods!

I Remember hooking up my ISDN with a Cisco/ISDN router with all those lights, it lit up like a Christmas tree at night!
First time surfing with ISDN I though "This is fokkin great! look how quick I'm moving around on the net" then proceeded to pitch my modem.

Especially when the B channel lights kicked in :) you just knew you were going full boost!

I can't complain.

I use http://www.testmy.net

Download results = 12305 Kbps or 12.3 Mbps (1502 kB/s)
Upload results = 2437 Kbps or 2.4 Mbps (297 kB/s)

I think I'm doing alright with Comcast Cable. :D

Then again, SpeedTest shows a different result...

Here is a trick if you are on wireless: I noticed several signals around my house using channel 11, and my FIOS was crawling at ~3,000 kbps.
So, I switched to a channel nobody uses (7 in this case), and immediately noticed a significant increase in my download speed.
Now, I am where it should be:

I test at www.dslreports.com occasionally. You can save/compare your speeds to others or yourself. This site has reviews of ISPs and tools to help you troubleshoot problems.
