NON P-car MEACHANIC needed!

does any one know a regular wrench that does side jobs in orange county, mobile guy is best.

i have a daily driver ford explorer that i need to get fixed, its parked in the garage and its an old high mile dependable dog, i dont want to spend alot on it so i thought a side job guy would be a good approach.

any suggestions, referrals... anyone want to give it a shot over a beer or two?.....

its not running smooth and kinda sputtering with black smoke when i turn it over..... im NOT wrench so i have no idea,..... might be something small or not.

saturday hangout in the garage kinda deal....

anyone wanna try or have a referral?

im in aliso viejo!

alex

OK...let's try to diagnose yourproblem. Has it been sitting for a long while? Did it begin runniing rough all of the suddden? Symptoms worse or better when it warms up? Backfiring? Blow black smoke comntinually while running after it warms up? Mileage?

Give us the scoopage and we may be able to walk it thru a DIY fix....

The symtoms sound like a problem I had with a Chev truck a few years back.
The problem there was an engine temp sensor which had quit, leading the computer to give the injector (throttle body) full rich. By the time I had gotten it figured out, we figured enough raw gas had been sprayed into the motor we changed the oil as a precaution.

dueller:

it has been sitting for a couple of months.

yes, it began running rough all of the sudden, literally was fine then within 20 feet it wasnt running right....

it hasnt run right since this happen to, it doesnt run any better when warm or cold, it just didnt run right for the start of the problem.

no backfiring at all.

yes, think black smoke out of the tailpipe, and you can smell fuel if it runs 2-3 minutes.

slodave: its a distributorless motor, no cap and rotor

does it have coil packs for each cylinder? if so unplug one at a time and visually check them, could be some corrosion on the contacts. if nothing visible maybe unplug one at a time with the engine running, should run more ruff when you unplug one working coil....if it doesn't change then that coil pack could be a suspect...
you could take it to autozone and plug in their diagnostic computer, it'll give you codes as to what sensor is seeing something wrong and narrow down the search.
