In L.A., you could hunt rats??? Hey, I wouldn't have to be too hungry to eat squirrel. Hillbilly? This was a staple food to many families during the great depression. People hunted for survival.

So now that we're going into a recession, can I expect to see squirrel in Gelson's?

We used to "bark squirrels" when I lived in the hills. Anyone who knows what that is without looking it up on the internet gets a beer from me!

One thing that I rarely do is miss, especially with black powder. Was taught how to do this by old timers back in the hills, and produced a dead critter with the most meat possible, especially when shooting with a .50 cal muzzleloader!

I never heard that term, but rest assured the woods behind my parents house had very few squirrels in it when I was a teen. When I visit parents now, they come up to the back patio in droves. They are pretty cute and fun to watch but truth be told, my trigger finger starts twitching uncontrollably. ![]()

Tim,
The squirrel sees you and runs to the back side of the branch, thinking its safe. You aim for the point where the squirrel is on this side of the branch and fire. The concussion kills the critter and usually very little damage to the meat so more to eat. Its the way the old timers did it and works very well if you are a good shot. I grew up in the hills and was pretty good, or so the US Army thought. Once I got on the range doing my quals they asked "you got anymore friends like this at home who shoot like this?" ![]() Joe

The best USA sniper grew up hunting pronghorns in SE Oregon...long range shooting involved in that hunting.
My deceased buddy David, avid hunter and skilled rifleman, told of his Army basic in Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. Sgt said to sight in their M-14's...David did so, using 3 rounds. Sgt. got pissed...but the problem the Sgt. had was that the rifle WAS sighted in....as David's next group showed. Some folks who grew up in the hill country, the desert country, learned to shoot well at a very young age...

Fort Lost in the woods...HOOT! Yep, you were there. Did you experience the weather my buddy called "snirt storms"?

Never heard the term "snirt storm". I was there for basic and AIT starting in the summer and ending in the fall. Unfortunately the basic training portion took place in the summer which made funstuff like the 15 mile march and the gas chamber (in full mopp gear) oh so pleasant. ![]() At least it was fairly nice in the mornings prior to breakfast when we had to do a couple miles every morning on the course we called "@sskicker hill". I only remember a couple rain storms in the summer (one of course happened while we were out in the field under those pretty much useless shelter halfs). By the time I was finished with AIT (51B-carpentry/masonry specialist) in the fall, I can remember some frigid mornings. I was there in the mid 80's when I joined the Reserves.

don't know any hillbillys, but down in the swamps, my grandfather's favorite part of squirrels were the brains. in fact, not too long ago you could find canned squirrel brains in the supermarket

In college, I had friends that shot squirrel from canoes on the Wabash river. The result: "squirrel on a shingle".

Tim...You & David must have been there during different seasons. According to David, "snirt" was a combination of snow and dirt...first a wind to kick up the dirt, then snow...and the two would mix together. Brown snow. He swore it was true, as the rest of us on the hunting trip were LOL...(edit) David was there in the early (1964 or so?) '60's...

Joe's buyin me a beer! I never had enough gun for it (22 shorts) , so I just went for the headshots. Was also fun to run the soy field and scare up a covey of quail and then stalk them to make a headshot wtih the 22....
Friend of mine's father claims to have lived in the college dorms and ate by getting old popcorn from the rec hall and using it to bait pigeons and squirrels and then shooting them with a bb gun...

I read an article a couple of months ago about some nice restaurants in the UK serving grey squirrel dishes. Apparently the grey squirrels are over-running the red squirrel population and some enterprising folks are helping out the "reds" by eating the "greys".

I like rabbit better than squirrel or rat. Rattlesnake is mighty good.
