Moving to Tampa, should I take the 74 911?
I'll be moving to Tampa this summer. I have a red 74 911 w/ black interior and no AC. This is an extra car that I use for fun and not a daily driver.
I assume that living that close to the coast will quickly eat away at the non galvanized body. I also assume that summer heat will make the non AC interior too hot to use, but I'm not sure how weather will impact driving during other seasons. Any advice from others who live in this area and have pre-galvanized cars? Thanks, Pat |
In the heat of the summer it will only be fun to drive in the evening.
Then we have this time of year right now...... I plan all my track days and Autocrosses in the Winter. The Goldcoast PCA does not run its AXes in July - August. Keep it Garaged, washed, and waxed and unless your going to drive it on Dayton Beach, I do not see why it will rust. In the winter months I drove my Targa all the time, October through April/May were always great motoring months. June through September? Evening or early morning runs and then trips to and from Track days or Autocrosses. I'd keep it, especially if its a toy, so many opportunities to take it out and enjoy it down here. |
I think you should take it, if AC is the question a complete set up can be had for less than a grand. I bet if it was 1974 you would take it without question. When I was a child I lived in Okeechobee (sp?) for a few years, no matter how hot it was it was never to hot to go outside and play.

The A/C is a pretty big deal during the summer. I upgrade my A/C twice and it still wasn't good enough. But that was my DD. If its your 2nd car the why the hell not?
It only rains for an hour or so a day during the summer and most people are indoors working at that time. So thats not an issue. |
No don't take it. Drop it off here on your way to Fla. I'll keep it safe and exercised for you. Must exercise those gaskets. No nasty salt air here. Plenty of garage space.
Of course, you can pick it up when you move back. Problem solved. |
Living in Tampa will have no effect on the rust your car is likey to develop. If you lived on St Pete beach it would, but not Tampa. Just do your best to keep it out of the rain and on hard pavement. People that keep their cars in the back yard in the grass with a blue tarp over it soon find out they have no floor boards but the roof is rust free.
You'll need AC here for about 7 months of the year. The other five months you need to roll the windows down and listen to the engine. |
My cabriolet doesn't have AC - and hasn't for the past 5 years
Plenty of folks keep pre galvanized cars even in saint petersburg... Just take some care and you'll be fine. No salt on the roads here - great tracks and activities virtually year round. |
Are you kidding? Take it. Leave the wife and kids though.

Summer is HOT! But the nights are great. Many nights when it would cool off I would go for a blast across all the Tampa Bay bridges. Winter rocks. I had no AC in the old S and didn't care. I had a couple teeners while I lived there too. Even if you had a/c they are pretty worthless in FL. Take it. Look up Jeremy and the gang when you get there, and have a coffee for me.
Down there sand is the enemy. |
Jeremy, I saw you at the (weak) swap meet Sat but you took off before I could get up with you.

As far as rust and the 914 - don't worry about it - bring the car - enjoy the weather - prices of houses are coming back down to more reasonable levels - taxes and insurance still sucks - but hopefully those will drop too in the near future. check out or 7 day forecast - not bad for mid march. http://doppler.tbo.com/wfla_7day.jpg |
Didn't the factory recall all 914's without rust to install it?
|
All the ones I've owned it was standard equitment.
|
Take it.. I was stationed at McDill for a couple of years.. drove a 69 BMW2002.. no AC... hot .. just got used to it.. hopefully you'll have a garage .
|
yes, always take your Porsche with you when you move.
|
i'm taking mine :D

Umm where would you be leaving it if you don't take it and is the place alarmed?:D |
Thanks for the advice guys. I'll plan to take it. If we don't get a place with a big enough garage for all the vehicles, I can always rent garage space somewhere.

Where in Tampa are you going to live?
