They also get the necessary training, re-education, etc. that must be exist for a well balanced, symbiotic employee-employer relationship. Now, with H1 visas being increased on an annual basis, it is now common for American workers to get just 2-3% raises. Those who can't keep up with technology, the fat ones, the ugly ones, the old ones, the ones who dont belong to the click, the ones who can't play golf, the ones who cant stay late because of kids,......... get booted out! There were hundreds of MIS guys where I used to work; today, I could count with my fingers the remaining employed ones. Remember the "mainframe guys." I know a lot of them who were willing to get cross-trained on PCs and mid-range machines. However, with H1 visas, they just get 'retired.' So guys, help me out here. How is this helping the economy!!!!! p.s., Whenever someone finally approaches me to ask how they could be like me, I sadly say: "Don't try to enter the computer industry. It is too late as it is not lucrative anymore---globalization killed its local fortune." |

Hispanics are the main immigration problem--the illegal ones who have crossed over from Mexico in the millions over the years, poor people with little education and skills. Having kids here who are citizens just multiplies the problem geometrically. The number must be 25-30 million by now.
The best way to solve this problem is to make Mexico a state, and send them back to their original homes. That way, the Mexicans share the wealth, and we get the oil. And then there's Venezuela... |

H1B are popular and let in tons of people. The bigger the H1B, the lower the salary is for US educated engineers.
Everytime they bring in a new group of H1Bs, the rates drop to minimum wage due to the H1Bs. Thing is that they are actually making pretty good engineers and doctors in other countries. Everyone in the US wants to be a rapper or American Idol, and no one wants to study hard just to have a middle class lifestyle. I was always OK with that.. ONLY REAL JOB FOR AN AMERICAN IS TO MANAGE INCOMING TALENT.. |
The laws of supply and demand work for the price of oil or computer workers wages.
Imagine if some "protected" groups of our society - lets say members of the state bar associations - were suddenly forced to compete with barristers from India or Nigeria suddenly granted a boatload of H1B visas? Somehow I can't imagine that happening.. |

Cab - I am not saying it is a good thing. All kinds of visas are given out and it naturally depresses wages...
I don't think it is fair thing. If your study for a decent job and work in that very viable industry - they should not open the door to the third world.. And the point I was trying to make is that could - but never will happen to lawyers. |
This is Gate's euphemistic way of saying he can't get enough skilled tech types for lower wages and benefits. It's also the corporate mantra.
The US should take the position of employment for US citizens first; then fill needs from overseas. Doesn't that make sense? If you're from the US, try getting a job in Canada and see what they say. In my infrequent trips up north, they ask what your purpose is in their country. Canada wants full Canadian employment, as it should be here. Sherwood |

I started to post a really interesting post about I/S, the future, and the company I work for.
Then the short answer dawned on me. All kidding aside… If you're in school, don't major in computers, IS, Business, or anything else. Go to law school. Sure lawyers don’t really producer anything. And yes, lawyers don’t increase a society’s standard of living. But they are really good at redistributing wealth to themselves If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. |
