3rd reason I don't own a Carrera GT

owners tend to burn out clutch in 2,000 miles. Cost is $28K to replace. Techs say you cannot drive the GT like a regular stick, by feathering the clutch and gas together to move. Seems the Carrera GT raises the rpm as you release the clutch and then you step on the gas. Most owners have difficulty learning.

Usually a Carrera GT in local Porsche dealer nearly every time I go by there. This one had the engine dropped down waiting for the retun call from customner to okay $28K for the work.
Some owners think it is a warranty issue. Dealer doesn't buy into that, because they have warned drivers about the clutch.

Jeff Higgins 03-18-2008 11:44 AM

I bet I could learn. I'd like to try...

TerryBPP 03-18-2008 12:18 PM

I'd like to have this problem.

URY914 03-18-2008 12:18 PM

I figured it out. The clutch in mine is fine.

Burnin' oil 03-18-2008 12:21 PM

I installed a centrifugal clutch. Works great on mine.

MRM 03-18-2008 12:26 PM

Those guys pay a half million dollars for a car and they don't even get an automatic?

you mean F1 flappy paddle sequential gearbox

automatics are for regular folks, that's for vw's and toyota's...

MRM 03-18-2008 01:19 PM

You pay all that money and you still have to shift? Are the flappy padle things cheaper than an automatic? Why would you be saving money on a half million dollar car? Seems like they should have a decent four speed auto that would fit a GT. I understand they even have 5speed autos. Maybe one of those are in order. It can't cost that much more.

:)

svandamme 03-18-2008 01:25 PM

you're really out of date with your info
BMW introduced a 6 speed automatic n 2002, Mercedes did a 7 speed in 2003, and Lexus did an 8 speed in 2007...

MRM 03-18-2008 01:43 PM

Wow. Six and Seven speed autos? With all those fancy auto slush boxes, can't Porsche afford to offer one of those as an option, if they're too cheap to make an auto standard?

Aurel 03-18-2008 03:54 PM

My clutch does not have a Carrera GT attached to it, so it works just fine.

Some of you guys need to bone up on your GREEN, so you don't confuse each other. ;)

gprsh924 03-18-2008 04:02 PM

so what are the first two reasons you don't own a carrera GT?

trekkor 03-18-2008 04:10 PM

How can they justify $28k for the work/parts.

Let's say it takes a week of labor, how much are they charging for the parts.

Ridiculous...

the clutch pack is 2 x $9K, flywheel $7k, = $25K, labor is minimal.

Seriously doubt the technician sees more than a fraction of that. Heck I doubt the dealer sees very much of it. Goes straight to line Porsches pocket book. This is going on with ALL their OEM parts. Just look at what they now charge for WURs and fuel pumps:mad:

LakeCleElum 03-18-2008 07:23 PM

So, to make your clutch last, U just bring it up to 6K, drop the clutch and replace tires twice a year?

stevepaa 03-18-2008 08:45 PM

actually you do not touch the gas pedal until you have engaged the clutch.

legion 03-19-2008 04:16 AM

Sounds like Porsche outsmarted themselves with a complicated, expensive system that is supposed to make the car easier to drive but does the opposite.

masraum 03-19-2008 05:08 AM

If I could afford a half a million dollar car, I wouldn't give a darn about a clutch job. But I bet I could learn to drive it. Or, I could fly to Germany and pay someone to teach me.

onewhippedpuppy 03-19-2008 05:10 AM

I DIY my C-GT clutch jobs.

If I had to guess I'd say you're paying Porsche for the R&D that developed the product. But for $28k you could probably have a clutch manufacture make you a knock off.

Thats how I do my hand jobs.

89911 03-19-2008 06:37 AM

If they can afford the car, they car afford a $50,000 clutch job. I dream occasionally of owning a car like this and it seems like hearing a story about how much the maintenance cost validates why I don't "need" to own it. Sort of like somehow you worked your way into living in a 10 million dollar mansion and finding out you have to pay $25,000/month in taxes. These people that make 5-10 million/year don't live in my neighborhood and to them, this equates to out $250 brake job. They probably enjoy it and if gives them bragging rights at the next dinner conversation.:(

Mule 03-19-2008 06:50 AM

I wonder if Micheal Dell felt the same about his GT dying on side the highway unexplainedly?

stealthn 03-19-2008 07:07 AM

Whaaaa

Porsche is just trying to keep the price up with the jones...er, I mean enzos :D

Porsche-O-Phile 03-19-2008 08:03 AM

I think Pelican has the clutch assembly listed for purchase through here. If I had money to burn I'd order one just to see if they could actually fill the order or not. :)

pwd72s 03-19-2008 08:23 AM

Hmmm, fix the GT clutch or get a boob job for my girlfriend? These are the painful choices the mega rich must make...:D

stevepaa 03-19-2008 10:41 AM

If I ever get to that position it will be a decision between a clutch and a knee replacement.

sketchers356 03-19-2008 10:46 AM

I still don't understand the CGT clutch system.

Why did they seem to reinvent the wheel?

I know that it is a carbon ceramic clutch (which makes the high price more believable to me) but what else is so different about it?

cgarr 03-19-2008 10:53 AM

These parts all come with a box of condoms?

CGT just like any other car! sort-of

28K clutch job....

i guess 89911 has it right.. its all perspective........ and at the end of the day its a car...... :

4 wheels
a steering wheel
gas
seats
brakes
windows
a radio

and a tow-truck driver named "chuy" (literally, the patch on his shirt said freaking chuy!) who doesnt really care what kind of car it is.... its a car to him that he had to hook up his jumper cables to get it started...... and off to the next car that wont start.....

dont get me wrong brotha's..... i LOVE these cars,...... want one in the near future!........ hehe

tcar 03-19-2008 12:27 PM

Have a acquintance that races. Was just at Sebring.

Says the GT is one of the best driving cars he's driven. Talked about the clutch (which he really likes).

He's gone to AZ and CA to give driving lessons to owners on how to drive it without killing themselves... or the car.

A number of people own them for just a few months, then sell. Just want to be able to brag that they had one.
