Speed Racer movie?
Have I been under a rock or something? Just heard about this last night....

Another poorly-made remake of a small-audience-appeal cult series. What a novel idea from Hollywood. Good to see that rolling over to the demands of the Writer's Guild has sparked such innovation and creative genius.
 I liked the series, but I think it'll be video bound within about 3 weeks sorry to say. Heck, "Cars" was original and well-done, hyped like crazy and it didn't meet expectations. Gotta' face it - most people aren't car enthusiasts. |
I'm a certified car nut and enjoyed 'Cars' (LOVE the sound Sally makes when she takes off ahead of Lightning) but Speed Racer was never tops for me. I liked that it had cars as the central theme but the animation is just *****.
I'm no doubt the odd man out on that thought though. I'll admit the entire 'anime' thing just doesn't resonate with me. |
I'm looking forward to it. I loved the cartoon as a kid and I've got my boys hooked on it now. My wife’s office had the movie prop Mach 5 onsite for a day (they have some product sponsorship in the move) and the boys and I went over and saw it. They did a good job capturing the design of the car.
The movie has some interesting filming technology, but we’ll see how it plays out. The rumor is that it’s going to be a big hit, but who knows. |
I loved "Cars" too (and bought it on DVD). Well-done, but my point is it didn't have the mass-appeal that another subject might have. A lot of the automotive enthusiast subtleties in that movie were probably lost on the glassy-eyed public-at-large, but there were some really great ones in there!
I hope the Speed Racer movie does well, but when you get right down to it, it's a remake. Same old, same old. Just like the Simpsons. Just like "The Grinch". Just like practically EVERYTHING that's ever been on TV and had any sort of rating. Hell, they even made a movie out of that "Superstar" Saturday Night Live skit. It's official - originality is DEAD in Hollywood. Well, maybe not "dead", but certainly on life support. The last two films I saw in the theater were "Bucket List" and "Juno", both of which I really liked - in no small part because they were ORIGINAL and used real acting talent, not just a bunch of SFX stuff strung together with lousy dialog and sixth-grade plotlines. |
Maybe the younger kids will rediscover the original Speed Racer as a result of this, but as a someone who grew up watching every episode I really have no interest in seeing the movie.

Anyone follow the Initial D series? Its a Japanese cartoon about mountain road racing / drifting.
The animation of the people stinks but the race sequences are great, its apparent they want to skim over the people scenes and spend time on the cars. I was just watching a few episodes the other day I have about 10 of the DVD's. If you do not like 80's and early 90's Japanese cars then ignore this post. |
I saw the trailer before the Horton Hears a Who movie. The effects look cool enough but nothing beats the ol cartoon. I think it will crash and burn JM2C.

Looking forward to watching it on TBS this summer.

Speed Racer
I used to love coming home from school and watching Speed Racer. I didn't care for the story lines or characters that much, but man those cars. I love those old 60's sport racers that were street legal with their hour glass bodies and pontoon fenders. Yea baby............. My ex even named my 914GT Trixie after Speeds girl friend. How come they never kissed or got jiggy with it:D
Well I'm shure I'll see it , but I won't pay to see it. Loved Cars |
