Need to Photoshop this bike...Any freeware out there?
I am thinking about getting this '86 Interceptor 500 on the road again and while the engine is out, I am thinking of painting it possibly silver with black trim. Anyone know of any decent simple to use photoshop type software programs available as freeware?

Ahhhhhhhh noooooo! Tim don't paint that classic. While not hugely collectible the early Interceptors are going up in price, particularly the all original ones like yours. Yours just looks like it needs a good cleaning.

Put down the paint and back away from the bike!
That bike looks too good to paint. Steve

I recently saw a Honda cafe done in what appeared to be the old Elsinore Silver and it interested me. There is a good chance I will do nothing, but it has a few dings and scrapes and while the engine may have to come out, I thought now if any was the time to think about paint work. (I know, this bike is completely different, none the less, it got me thinking of silver and black) ![]()

Just PS the girl onto your bike...
If you have no photoshop experience, I'd bet you'll find it really hard to get a decent idea of what a paint scheme would look like. But I bet it would look great in a silver like that. I think you'd need to get the seat to black, though.

The seat has a small tear so I was going to order a new cover in black if I re-painted.

Looking at your bike really makes me miss my '84 700. Going to the CBR seemed like a good idea at the time, but I really wish I would have just added that instead of selling my Interceptor.

Just joking about putting her in. I would be an easier job than trying to PS a paint job. She looks pasty because that's a B&W image with selective color left in for the Honda wing. But the bike does look better than her...

I got mine from an old college buddy for FREE several years ago after it had sat for 10 yrs or so in his parents shed. It had a few issues which I quickly fixed and I used the bike to commute 37 miles each way on nice days for a couple of summers. It is far from being "fast", but the price was right, I never really liked big heavy bikes and I convinced my wife it was worth having for the good gas mileage. Last summer after not riding it for several weeks, I got it out to head off to work and had difficulty starting it (I had to push start it). It acted as if it was "loaded up" and in a fit of anger from now being late for work, I held it WFO trying to "blow it out". Well after about 10 seconds of smoking and only managing about 5000-6000 rpm, I looked down in horror to see a huge pool of oil accumulating on the cement (it was coming from an expansion joint in the exhaust under the engine! I simply shut it off, got in my car and decided to not even think about fixing it till this spring. I am guessing the timing chain slipped and maybe a valve knocked a hole in the piston. But I will pull the plugs and do a compression check prior to yanking the engine. There is a very SLIGHT chance that the carbs had stuck and flooded the engine. It possibly could have been spitting diluted oil leaking past rings on a dead/fouled/flooded cylinder, but I am guessing major surgery is in order. ![]()

I'll give ya 2x what you paid and drive up to get it. It would be the perfect bike for my wife. And hopefully keep her from longing for a Harley.

Boy Tim, I've got to say that with an offer like mine I really expected a PM with directions to your house by now.
![]() Have you pulled the motor yet?

![]() I pulled the seat, tank, airbox and plugs last night and I think I may have found a few clues to my problem. It still has compression on all four cylinders and one cylinder had some thin oil that smelled like gas in it. I checked the oil level and it is way too high, so I think my problem last year was a stuck float which allowed a bunch of gas into the cylinder then crankcase. Tonight I am going to shoehorn the carbs out of it and give them a good cleaning. I think I may have dodged a bullet! I am still a bit perplexed by what appeared to be a very dirty pool of oil that spit out from the exhaust, but I a friend who spent a few years as a motorcycle mechanic says he thinks it was a mix of gas diluted oil pumping past the rings while that flooded cylinder was not firing. I have owned and worked on plenty of bikes/snowmobiles/cars etc over the years, but have never seen this situation. I think all will be well though. ![]()

Tim..I know you got the cafe racer bug. Strip all the original plastic off of it and make a naked bike. Or better yet, surf around eBay and pick up some used plastic and build you a baby CB1100R replica ala the honda shown on the cafe racer thhread. Keep the original plastic to put it back in stock form. Heck...quarter cafe fairings can be picked up for less than $60 shipped if ya wanna make it old school.
That's what I'm doing with my budget Buell M2 cafe build...keeping the stock plastic and buying cheapo evilBay stuff to customize. Can always go back to stock if I want and sell the cusustom parts if I ever get rid of it. jim Last edited by Dueller; 03-19-2008 at 04:56 PM.. |

The bodywork on that Baby Interceptor looks pretty good. It would be a shame for you to change it. Those bikes often weren't owned by those who had the means to keep them in nice condition, so it's pretty uncommon (even here in SoCal) to see them with such nice plastics. Just fix the motor, and keep the paint stock. So many other thrashed candidates to turn into a cafe bike, if that's what you want.

![]() Now that the engine probably is staying in it, I am shying away from the idea of giving it a face lift for now. I just got the carbs pulled and am heading in for the house before wifey figures out that I am not working on her Audi A6 that just died on her today. ![]()
