Car Rental & Insurance

Going on vacation and will be renting a car for a week while vacationing at Grand Canyon and Bryce. I know I will be pressured to purchase insurance for the car. I have always declined in the past but that was on business trips. Can anyone educate me on this?

TIA

Ed

Check your auto policy before you leave. My policy covers rentals.

If you rent it on your Amex you get better coverage than the rental place provides. On another note when I worked for a smaller company, we came out one morning to the hotel parking lot to find that my co workers rental had been backed into (at what appeared to be a high rate of speed). We he didn't have the insurance, and this particular company didn't provide it, well he needed an attorney in the end to sort the whole mess out.

Also check your Credit Card. I smacked a rental on Amex & it was painless - although it wasn't my fault. I always decline extra ins.

I ALWAYS get extra insurance. I sleep better.

Definitely get it in foreign countries

Heard stories of rental companies freezing your credit card until your insurance company pays.

+1 check your credit card agreement, it's possible it provides insurance if you pay for the rental with your card.

I had an accident about 15 years ago and had the additional insurance from the car rental company, $10K to be exact. When the dirt bag I hit sued, it became my primary insurance, and my $1MM umbrella became secondary. So I had an attorney chosen by the rental insurance company defending me on a max $10K worth or protection, not an attorney of my choosing under my $1MM umbrella. I'd be careful and check. BTW, in the end, the guy got a settlement from the rental car insurance of a couple of grand. I'd sleep better with legal representation from the deeper pockets insurance.

Just check the small print. They may only insure up to a certain value of car 30-40k probably.
Don't ask how I know........

I never get the insurance. Waste of money.

The only time I asked for it was in the snow- I was told that their insurance was not available due to the snow!
