Hammond to Host BBC F1 coverage?

The last line is most interesting. Possibly the entire Top Gear Cast working F1 weekends? I have mixed feelings, their banter is great for a TV show about cars but will it work at a F1 Race?

Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond is in pole position to become the lead commentator when the BBC takes over the broadcasting of F1 races next season.

With the BBC announcing they've bought the rights to F1 from Bernie Ecclestone after ITV's withdrawal, the race is now on to see who will take over from James Allen and Martin Brundle as the UK's new commentators.

And according to the Times, Hammond, who survived a high-speed crash while trying to break the British land speed record for Top Gear two years ago, is the most likely candidate for the job.

The newspaper also reported that the BBC are planning on letting the 'Hamster', as Hammond is known, along with Jeremy Clarkson and James May, loose at grand prix weekends in an attempt to extend the audience beyond "petrolheads."

I can't see it.

Honestly, of the three, I think James May would make the best commentator.

I can't see Hammond or Clarkson taking the time to discuss fuel loads or pit strategy...

This would be great entertainment. Race commentery usually is so bad that no commentery would be an improvement. Everyone knocks David Hobbs for his dumb comments, but I find most of his comments funny. I don't watch the race to have a bunch of commentators trying to tell me what they think is going on since they are usually wrong.

Hobbs breaks me up all the time, come to think of it, it may be refreshing to have some commentators with some spunk.

I honestly like the Speed TV coverage but I love the Top Gear crew and hope BBC USA carries the race with them I would like to check it out.

Just keep Clarkson off the grid, with his condescending attitude he would just irritate the teams.

Hasn't something like this been tried:

Dennis Miller.

Rush?
