subaru forester 1990 timing belt, jumped?

it made a noise, then stopped, wont start, but occasionally fires.

is one cam on time, and the other jumped. owner just found the belt has not recently been changed, but it is intact.

no valve noise turning it over with the starter, but is it an interference engine? 2.5 L, 1990.
any sites with this info. seems like the ones i find are informative about the problems, but no real tech info.thanks for the help!

interference engine - one long belt for both cams - wouldn't try to crank it again

not the greatest site but check out www.subaruoutback.org and you can find links for t-belt procedures

Unfortunately, I used to work in a Sube speed shop....

Anyway, it IS an interference engine.
You will need to remove the accessory belt on the front of the engine, the the vibration damper. Once these are removed, you can remove the front cover over the t-belt. (Is easier of you remove the alternator and move the PS pump to the side)

Once in the timing area, there is a small notch on the top of the crank gear, make sure this is straight up before removing the belt!! There are no real markings on most Sube engines for finding out if the cams are still in time. New timing belts come with lines painted on them, that you align with the crank, and both cam pulleys. (there are notches on the cam pulleys that the lines should line up with)

The real kicker is the d@mn t-belt tensioner... Compress it SLOWLY, and insert a piece of stiff wire in the shaft. If you compress it too quickly you will damage it.

If you need more in-depth info, I can grab some documentation from the shop and scan it for you.

Let me know!
