We already did.

But worthy of further exploration.

Bad idea IMHO

I can't believe that the technology doesn't exist to do this in country. It should be done here just on general principle, next we will be outsourcing the printing of US currency.

I propose outsourcing the three branches of government. The upside outweighs the downsides.

We're a "service" economy now, remember?

We have alot of dumb/stupid people in charge..

Common sense was outsourced long ago ,we are really just renting this place from China and others. Day may come when we get a eviction notice.

I predict it just got easier to buy a fake U.S. passport.

If we are going to outsource passports, we might as well outsource the CIA and FBI too...

What seems really stupid about this is it's not something that's price dependent. If they cost $10 more, people that need them will still buy them. Why try to save a buck here?

Xactly. Considering the cost of a PassPort vs the travel expenses. Drop in the bucket that you need to spend every 10 years.

Don't you think that one can automate this process to the point where you hit ENTER on your screen, and out comes a finished passport? Who cares if the machine sits in Thailand or in Wisconsin? I can not imagine that the cost savings are huge, if you put this together correctly. And that's probably where the problem lies. They hand it to a contractor which will take the path of least resistance.

Aside from that, there should be a requirement that official documents can only be handled and printed in the US. I am sure they send the information over the web.
