Goodfellas

ok, maybe we can agree on this "art." Watching Goodfellas right now. Just a few minutes in, but it's been awhile since I've seen it and forgot how good a film this is. DeNiro and Pesci are chewing scenery, but it tastes so good...

Also a reminder about Liotta...stunning work. He sure disappeared after this. The kid who played his as a teen is great too.

Funny to see about half the cast of the Sopranos with more hair (and less of it gray) ;)

Sometimes it takes a great director to bring out the best in a mediocre actor...

I don't, however, want to start speculating on Scorsese's intent... ;)

nostatic 03-29-2008 09:06 PM

I'm interpreting this as a gangster film. Did I get it right?

I remember when I saw this in the theaters. I almost didn't make it through. Liotta's characters descent was a little too close to home for me, and I was gripping the seat and sweating. Could barely walk out when it was over.

CJFusco 03-29-2008 09:10 PM

Gangster film? As a dedicated neo-Freudian, my set of experiences causes me to interpret GOODFELLAS as Scorsese's homoerotic male-bonding fantasy...

JUST KIDDING (on all accounts - I'm no Freudian).

In all seriousness, GF is one of the great ones. Love that movie.

I've seen it so many times, usually in segments. It lost out to "Dances with Wolves" for an Oscar. If both are on, which one would you choose?

MMARSH 03-29-2008 09:18 PM

Great movie. Ray Liotta disappear? come on he was in that great epic Wild Hogs last summer;)

speeder 03-29-2008 10:25 PM

It's a masterpiece. And Liotta could have retired at 40 w/ his body of work, he is one of the greats. Still, that film was a case of *actor meets role* for him.

That film has about 400 memorable lines in it.

9dreizig 03-29-2008 10:30 PM

I know of no one who doesn't love that movie!!

Excellent flick. Joe Pesci really shows his acting ability. From My Cousin Vinny to his role in this movie, brillant.

Along with A Bronx Tale, Goodfellas is one of my favorites. Actually, A Bronx Tale is quite close to the type of neighborhood I grew up in.

Hah, my favorite tactic for pointing out the fallacy in Academy decisions. GOODFELLAS, obviously; and for that matter, I would rather watch STAR WARS than ANNIE HALL...

You think I'm funny, how do you think I am funny, am I here to amuse you?

I think Scorsese nailed the life of a mobbed up guy.

tabs 03-30-2008 11:25 AM

Don't forget Casino...which told the tale of the mobs involvement in LV.

This made me think of "The Black Donnellys." Only 13 episodes were made, but damn good, IMO. Anybody see it?

cantdrv55 03-30-2008 01:18 PM

The Godfather
Goodfellas

Top 2 gangster flicks IMO

tchanson 03-30-2008 04:17 PM

Kaaahren!

I saw it again not long ago as well, and I was struck most by Lorraine Bracco's work.

She had perhaps the toughest part to credibly carry, and with the benefit of a decade plus of hindsight, I still think her's is the best performance in the film.

David, considering your line of work, I can't say I blame you for that attitude. Out of curiousity, do you normally see the flics that put a friendly face on crime?

Personally, I think Goodfellas is one of the best. Flatbutt brought up "A Bronx Tale" which I think is seriously under-appreciated. Another excellent movie.
