PUG - who owns one?

We got a Pug about 5 weeks ago - strange, cool, smart, hard to 'read' - all that stuff.
Who else has one?

holy crap that is cute. a pug was my first dog. i was a dorky kid, and a pug probably shouldnt have been my first dog. we had to give the thing daily eye drops. take great care of that little guy!

you named it rose?

stomachmonkey 04-01-2008 07:16 PM

Stepped on one once, makes a bit of a mess.

Have never owned one but there was one in our training class, Lola, she was a trip.

I'd consider one, they are pretty cool.

Racerbvd 04-01-2008 07:20 PM

We had one when I was a kid, take care of the eyes:)

Jim Richards 04-01-2008 07:26 PM

Cool looking dog. :)

Hard-Deck 04-01-2008 07:26 PM

I've got one. They have a tendency to be hyper for the first 2-3 years, then they mellow out. As yours grows, make sure to have the vet check his ability to breathe through his nose. It's common to have to have a nose job done to open up the airways. We had to have this done with ours. They are loyal and will pick one person to bond with. Great dogs.

masraum 04-01-2008 07:36 PM

I've always thought they were cute. I'd consider having one.

pwd72s 04-01-2008 07:39 PM

You don't own dogs or cats...they own you.

David Siebert 04-01-2008 07:51 PM

I have a pug and a puggle (pug/beagle mix)

I have always been a big dog person until my wife talked me into a pug. They are extremely affectionate but pick up anything and everything that is on the floor or the ground. The puggle is easier but still demands alot of attention.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1207104628.jpg

We have had pugs for over 20 years and were heavily involved with San Diego pug rescue for 4 or 5 of those. We learned several things: they snort and snore, they have very sensitive skin, they don't respond well to human food as it bothers their skin and they can have rear hip joint issues when they get old. Our oldest one finally died when he was 19 years and 4 months so they are pretty hardy.

God, dogs are the best. Your pup is cute. I can see her thinking "Treats?!"

DARISC 04-02-2008 12:43 AM

My neighbor down the street has two (siblings). Great little dogs. It's my problem, I admit it, but cute as they are, when I play with them and they get all excited and hyper, I always get a faint queasy feeling thinking about their eyes popping out.

Joeaksa 04-02-2008 05:12 AM

Sorry but if its not up to your knees, its a football. Last pup was a Malamute... and it was a dog not a football.

Me too! OK, Joe's right...he'd be a football now, but back then I was short. "So ugly they're cute" is right :)

We have two. I've never owned dogs as a kid and my wife talked me in to the first one eight years ago. Our male was a bit hyper at first but a strong solid dog. For some reason he doesn't bark. We picked up a black female about a year later and the male really calmed down. We heard they are better in pairs. They are lap dogs and love to be held. They will follow you thru the house, greet you at the door, jump up on the sofa and take nap with you.

We love them.

KFC911 04-02-2008 05:25 AM

I never heard my pug bark either...

URY914 04-02-2008 05:44 AM

Our black one barks her head off. Maybe it's because she's a ....

KFC911 04-02-2008 05:57 AM

I didn't know pugs came in black (all I've ever seen were tan) ... I learn something new everyday here :)

cmccuist 04-02-2008 06:14 AM

Pugs are great! We own one and my daughter has two. They are known as velcro dogs, because they practically stick to you wherever you go. They're great companion dogs.

We call Baxter the "ambassodor of dogs". He's so non-threatening that no other dog even tries to dominate him. He makes friends with other dogs immediately.

Yup, they come in black. My daughter took this photo and it's a little off center, but he's a black one. His paws are white and it was the selling point to her when he was puppy. Loyal, affectionate, he barks only at noises at the door like a watchdog, snores, eats anything you give him. Great dog.

KFC911 04-02-2008 06:36 AM

Thanks for the pic! Ahh, the snoring...I'd forgotten about that it's been so long :)

the 04-02-2008 07:53 AM

Our neighbor has one. Barks all day and it barks all night.

I've been in similar situations - absolutely infuriating! Put me in a mood where I was "fit to kill" (the ignorant owner, not the dog).

we have two pugs, I was never a fan of small dogs until we got a pug. They have a huge personality. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1207149909.jpg

We have a 7 year old GSD and a 6 year old Pug. My kids love them both, but the pug puts up with much more from them.

Here are a couple of pictures from last summer camping.

Thanks Keith, even though it was May, it can still get chilly around 8500 feet..

My 7 year old daughter named here "Rose" :p

Super active, very fast dog, dense with regards to potty training (tips?), retrieves like no tomorrow -
14 weeks old

DAMN! all cute.

my pug was black, named JIGGY. (this was years ago, before "getting jiggy with it" was ever uttered). he had crazy breathing issues. LOUD! he ended up with tumors in his eyes and had to be put down.

911boost 04-02-2008 01:33 PM

The pugs name is Casey Jones, and the GS is Samson. I had to have some minor platic surgury done on Casey's eyes, but his breathing is just fine. He is a huge one, and strong. I guess thats what happens when you grow up with a bigger dog around.

:)

My parents have one....Ginger she is a great dog. A little obsessed with food but very chill for the most part and a good hiker(not on hot days though).

She has had problems with bladder stones so she is on a special diet and had to get a mast cell tumor removed.

We have a black pug named "Jake."

Dumb as a post, but fun, David

looneybin 04-04-2008 08:39 PM

I used to have 2 giant rottweilers that were just huge teddy bears (RIP), one time i had them at the dog park when they were surrounded by a pack of about 6 pugs. the way they snort when they breath, my rotts were scared to death that they were under attack. It was the funniest thing to see 2 giant rotts cowering in fear to a pack of pugs.

erics944 04-06-2008 07:09 AM

That's the reason we got our little guy Winston. We lived in an apartment and we both grew up with big dogs and wanted a rottie. However, that just wouldn't be fair to the big dog living in an apartment. So I talked my wife into getting a pug. Best decision we ever made. It will be hard to get anything other than a pug next time. He is a little dog with a big dog attitude!:D
