The Devil's Swimming Pool

In Zimbabwe, Africa, you will find the magnificent Victoria Falls, at a height of 128m - 420 feet!.

The location is known as the "Devil's Swimming Pool". During the months of September and December, people can swim as
close as possible to the edge of the falls without falling over.

These falls are becoming well known amongst the "radical tourist" industry, when more and more people search for the ultimate experience.

Would you dare?

No ******* Way!

slodave 04-02-2008 09:14 PM

Right on!

Hugh R 04-02-2008 09:15 PM

Ugh, no

Tobra 04-02-2008 09:20 PM

I did that before in OReagan country when in college, kinda stupid, pretty cold water, much better in Hawaii, warmer water.

Better at the base of the falls to me, sort of a rush to have all those negative ions blowing in your face, especially if it is water falling onto rocks, instead of into a pool.

slodave 04-02-2008 09:23 PM

I'd jump off a 100ft trestle bridge into the Yellowstone river if given the chance. Oh wait, already did that.

JV911SYDNEY 04-02-2008 09:25 PM

i was there in '99 at the end of the wet season

i might go in the water in the dry season

Gogar 04-02-2008 09:36 PM

Nope. I'll watch, thanks.

BRPORSCHE 04-02-2008 09:36 PM

I have done many crazy things in my life with rock climbing. No fear of heights at all. There is absolutely no way in he11 I would do that though. I think the big problem for me would be being in the water, not the heights.

Moses 04-02-2008 09:41 PM

No!

Joeaksa 04-02-2008 09:51 PM

Was there years ago before it was a tourist attraction. Aint no ******* way I am going to try that!

kstar 04-02-2008 09:54 PM

A small crest in that river and the only problem is the landing.

Best,

Kurt

U might say its the ultimate "Infinity Pool." And no I wouldn't, nor would I jump out of a perfectly good airplane either.

Nahh, there'd be a Burger King and a Mackers up there. That would stop 'em.....

The dude with his little kid deserves a shellacking.

sammyg2 04-03-2008 06:08 PM

Not me, I try not to do stupid things.

dzls rok 04-03-2008 06:20 PM

As I have been around NC and the Smokies I am always amazed at how easy it is for someone to fall from just about anything up there.

I am surprised there are not railings everywhere.

On topic - I got all freaked out looking at the pics.

I'd do it.....just for the rush.

Bill Douglas 04-03-2008 07:37 PM

10,000 miles away it even frightens me looking.

At the bottom of the falls and heading to Lake Kariba (sp) they have some pretty amazing white water rafting.

And if the new Zimbabwe prime minster/president gets his act together it shouldn't cost $100,000,000,000 zim dollars for a ride on the raft.

targa911S 04-04-2008 05:57 AM

just seeing the pictures made my bones hurt!

Jeff Higgins 04-04-2008 06:26 AM

Yeah, the meathead with his kid out there deserves far more than a shellacking. What the hell is he thinking? Man... in the blink of an eye... yikes...

Maybe the kid asked "Where'd mom go?"

onewhippedpuppy 04-04-2008 07:27 AM

Ummmm, no. I like life. Whoever takes their kids there should be pushed over the edge (sans kids).

gassy 04-04-2008 07:55 AM

Let's organize a PPOT International Meet. We'll go to the Devil's Swimming Pool first and then well go walk that path in Spain.

Rikao4 04-04-2008 08:01 AM

I can hear my Mom..it's always neat, till someone goes over..

While I've always been strongly disinclined to approach the edge of anything taller than I am and won't try SCUBA diving because of my fear of depths, the photos may be of a totally placid little shallow five feet off the river bank and not all that dangerous. But I still react like Doug's cat when I look at the pictures.

When I broke my leg snowboarding, we had a mantra - "Taste Death - Live Life!" Often, the closer you are to death, the more you can feel alive. That may have something to do with the fact that I drive my Porsche on the racetrack.

That said, I believe there is a HUGE difference between this type of attitude vs. those who have a death wish.

Would I take a lap in the Devli's Swimming pool? I dunno - maybe. I do have a fear of heights, and in high school, my best friend died in a drowning accident... But it does look like a thrilling experience. First, I'll jump out of an airplane, and maybe drive the death road in South America...

I was there in late '99 and bungied off the Zambesi bridge just upstream a bit... that was a rush. Saw Devil's pool from the other side of the falls, very neat place indeed.

WTF?
:D

onewhippedpuppy 04-04-2008 09:41 AM

Z, I feel plenty alive, thanks.:D

When time/money allows, I hope to race and get a pilot's license, so I'm not a total sissy. But I figure, why tempt fate?

TheMentat 04-04-2008 09:43 AM

funny... A buddy of mine just sent me a picture of himself over there!

M.D. Holloway 04-04-2008 10:00 AM

Well first I would need to be in Zimbabwe which is not gonna happen but I do enjoy the pictures.

Moses 04-04-2008 10:06 AM

It's all fun and games till somebody craps their pants.

richde 04-04-2008 10:14 AM

I'm sure it's not as scary in person.

Should we start building that railing around the Grand Canyon too?

87911jon 04-04-2008 10:51 AM

Crossing into Zimbabwe from Botswana, there were wart hogs rooting through trash bins at the border... a strange thing to see.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1207331363.jpg
